Getting a bike - Help Please - RS125

fair enough, it'll definately come to less than £1000 even after fixing the problems (assuming nothing major they don't know/aren't saying) so a steal I guess,

I'm just one of those that likes 'bargains', keeps me away from the overly popular bikes/cars due to the ott prices :p

I'm already in the mood where I have my eyes set on it and no matter what anyone says I'm getting it anyway :D :(

Thanks for everyone's help though, no doubt I'll be back when I get it with pictures :D

got an rs 125 had it for 6 years now, spent an arm and leg on keeping it running over the 4 years i had on the road. however its not just a glorified scooter as has been mentioned, 0 - 60 in about 7 seconds (with aftermarket tuning) and a top speed of 100mph.

If ya want one, and have your heart set on one then go for it.

mines for sale £900, but needs the carb cleaning and a peccy tank flush as its stood for 24 months. I have a new starter motor for it too as the old ones not kicking in, just needs fitting.

Braided hoses, 2004 calipers, Mitaka pistonand barrel, Jim Lomas S/steel hand made zorst, 34mm Delorto carb, V force Carbon reeds (KTM made to fit) New fairings all round, tinter screen, carbon bits and bots, pirelli's front and back, LED conversion tail light, tinted headlight cover, custom graphics on the top fairing, new rear subframe.... the list goes on..

anyone interested PM me... lol

Cool mate, what year and miles? 6 years is a long time! and as you say, I have my heart set on one too :(

lol, its had a hard life, current klms is at 56,000 klm, but no expense has ever been spared really, totted up maintance recipts that total over £4k for the 4 years! 3 new top ends after rings nipped up, and burned a hole inthe piston crown trying a different CDI on there!

love the feel of it at 11 - 12,000 revs, screaming like a banshee, and actually keeping up with much larger bikes, used to hang around the Cat and Fiddle road and play with the big lads and annoy them with Uber corner speeds and knee downs, but im to old for all that now!

Avoid ... yes i know yer young and its all black and sexy but yer looking at a world of expense and pain .

Ask yerself a few questions...If its so easy to fix why has the seller not done ? If it was roadworthy and had a mot he would get double his money .
Why is it all black? I would guess its been dropped and resprayed .. Do you really wanna buy a crashed bike with no history?

Why is he suggesting it could be used on track? Missing V5 maybe?
Rs125 are very fragile .often requiring top end rebuilds every 6-8k.
The require decent oil and lots of tlc ..Has it had it before? I doubt it

I know you want summit nice and decent to ride ..BUT then with yer head and not yer heart..You wont have it for long...if bikes are for you , you will pass yer test and get a big bike . Dont let this unknown spoil your first steps into biking and really consider a decent 4 stroke to tide you over till you can get something bigger

Persil

I thought mine was a "step up" to a larger bike, but I fell in love with the hooligan style rs125... and still have it 6 years down the road..

HOWEVER you are right, they do need top ends regular as they like to nip rings up. Cluthc goes after about 20k of hard riding, clutch cables are like cheese and snap as soon as you look at it, tyres last no time, zorsts need changing as stock is utter crap. Not really a cheap toy, with buying mine and tuning it to a whopping 32.6 bhp at the wheel it cost well over 7k all in all.

If i was in the market for a 2t, it would have to be an NSR 125, much more reliable, and takes abuse better.

DONT get a 125cc four stroke, you may as well get on the bus!

I've been looking for the NSR about here too, but have yet to see one anywhere over here. Have looked in auto-trader and a few local buy and sell type newspapers.

As I said, hopefully I'll get some experience with bikes through it. I just sent her an email asking about the V5.

Also, she wants rid of it because she got a 600cc after she passed her test.

Bobbins. There's nothing wrong with a 125 4-stroke, ideal commuter machine for someone who hasn't passed their test and the characteristics of a 4-stroke engine will be the same as the 4-stroke you will almost certainly buy when you pass your test.

I'll echo what some of the guys have said, that Aprilia does not look quite right, why is it all black, where are the decals, why's it on a paddock stand, what is it's history, has it been well maintained, have the previous owners (normally 17 year olds who want a race rep but don't have a licence) been paying £15 a litre for the 2T oil it likes to guzzle and made sure it was warmed up every time out?

EDIT

Why is there no V5? Seriously, this couldn't scream "DODGY" any harder if it tried.

It's your money at the end of the day but it looks like a money pit.

She bought it as a non runner a year ago.
She has spent a lot of money on it since then and has all the receipts and has got it running, other than the few things that I have mentioned above (starter, battery, and airbox).
It is black as she re-sprayed it and she also has the decals if I want to put them on.
She is 24.

Seems OK for me, I am having doubts but I think its extremely cheap to say no..

She spent all this dosh on it and she's had it a YEAR and doesn't even have registration documents?

Haha! Buyer beware.

M8 stay well clear of that bike. I would say that has been down the road at least once. Plenty of bikes around for that money.

No it wasnt in a crash! I have just spoken to my partner and he said we do have some reg documents, but we didnt reg. it when we bought it (over a year ago) so doesnt have the new v5. I really hope that makes sence. We do have a form that you can fill in. You can see all the documentaion when you come on Wed.
Surely that is more understandable?

To be honest yer not reading what yer being told . I have been a biker all my life and have had loads of bikes through my hands over the years and one of the few reasons i never bought a bike was missing V5's

Look at the evidence so far

Paddock stand on bike - Missing side or centre stand which could indicate its been raced . Also do you realise the reason bikes are raced and not put back on the road? Normally cause there nicked
Resprayed - Been crashed or abused
Bought as a fixer upper - Been abused all its life...left in someones garage for 2 years and has been bought by some chump for £50 who think the can eithier get it working or make a buck on it
Missing Parts - Why? Was it stolen recovered ...A mix of other bikes or just badly maintained and abused
price - £700 is not really a bargain not when you have £150 worth of bits to buy and fit and most times that list gets a lot bigger .

Everything yer seller says rings a bell ... We can all see it but you are blindly going down the path of an expensive in lesson in life .

Now for example i bought my son a NSR125 (2001) . it had been crashed it had the V5 and i had a good look at it before i bought it . The kid wanted 1600 quid ..i payed him £750 . What was not mentioned in his advert was it needed new tyres/chain+sprockets/front and rear pads/headset bearings pluse numerous other small bits and bobs which came to near 500 quid to fix and this was on a 2001 bike with 10k miles .. So i knew what i was looking at ...And still had a large bill....what horrors to you expect to find on the RS that the owner never told you about?

Go and see it...take a mate or someone who has some idea about bikes ... Look at everything...ask ackward questions ...if yer not happy walk away But i would if you must buy it ...looking at £400 so at least you minimise yer loss and have room for repairs ..Dont underestimate how expensive bikes can be to fix

Thanks for that Persil.

I have already got her down to £500 for it. I will haggle a bit more when I see it if I think its worth it.

For £500 that's not too bad a deal to be honest.

Even if you did not use it on the road, you could track day it and flog it 6 months later and still get yer money back IMHO.

But if you intend using it on the road, I would be wary of this particular bike.

Plenty of other RS125's out there m8.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, let us know how you get on.
