Thinking of getting a GT Avalanche 3.0 - any other recommendations?

Have started cycling to work and my last bike is a cheap halfords jobby. I'm likely looking at getting a hybrid (I'll mostly be cycling on roads but some off-road will be needed, bridleways/meadows etc) and my budget is "as cheap as possible", though at most £250-£300.

I remember reading a couple of good user reviews a little while ago for the GT Avalanche 3.0 - it looks good and fits my budget so is currently top of the list.

Anyone have any other suggestions or recommendations?

Edit - or if you have a GT Avalanche, any comments?

Best sub-£300 bikes according to the last "What Mountain Bike" magazine:
Saracen Element 3
Gary Fisher Tarpon
Merida Sub 20-D

Can you buy a bike through your work using "cycle to work" scheme? Will be about 40% cheaper.

Funny you say that, I spoke to my boss about it the other day and she said to hold off and she's going to join us to the scheme soon.

Cheers! i'll check these bikes out

The Giant Terrago has a fantastic spec, and it'll cost you around £300. 27speed Deore transmission, forks with lockout and hydraulic disc brakes. I've not had any experience with Giant personally, however it's always been true that any manufacturer whose most expensive bikes are right up at the top end (i.e. above a couple of thousand) will filter frame design and spec down the range over time.

The perennial favourite budget MTB is the Specialized Hardrock, fantastic bike for the price and with a lot of upgrade potential. Frame design for that came down from bikes costing five times as much.
