Morning All,

I'm getting a ludicrously loud noise when i coast in my 94 Cherokee 4.0 Limited Automatic. The faster i'm going, the louder the noise is. It's like a whining noise, a fast abrasion as if something is rubbing. It only happens when i coast which doesn't really worry me, however, it is really loud.

It sounds like its coming from the rear, but doesnt appear to originate from either side of the car specifically. I've checked bearings and driveshafts and everything appears to be fine.

is there anything anyones knows of specifically that is a problem in the older Cherokees? The car *has* been sitting for 4 years unused so i'm tempting to diagnose it the same as a lot of the noises it makes, just lack of use, rust build up, stuff like that; but as i said it is overwhelmingly loud.

Unfortunately i'm not sure i have a way of recording the sound, i'll see what i can do though.

Thanks if you know of anything.

My uncle has a 94 Cherokee, he has had to drop the gearbox out and replace it on more than one occasion.

From Honest John:

Grumbling diff problem cured with Forte Diff & Gear Treatment especially listed for the Jeep Cherokee’s diff problem) together with Valvoline Synpower GL 4/5 F/Synthetic Gear Oil.

I had a quick flick through a Haynes and they're reccomending the same as you guys. I'll drop the back out this weekend and make sure the diff is well oiled and check the leafs while i'm there.

Also the handbrake is noticeably good. I mean, it holds fast when it's on and doesn't seem to produce any resistance when off, but i'll give that a look too.

Thanks guys... i know it's easy to look at a haynes but it's never the same as talking to real people about it :)

Isn't the handbrake appied to all 4 wheels on 4x4s?

I haven't investigated on the Jeep, but on the Range Rover it was linked to the rear diff rather than the wheels themselves...

which could also be the source of the whine, as Edd mentioned; however having said that, i'd be able to hear the whine all the time, and not just when coasting?

When you coast, the forces acting on the bearings change, and noises can appear and disappear to suit depending on the wear. The same applies to the diff.

Yeah, i've checked the bearings and all seem to be fine (replaced one set). Is far too loud to be situational, if that makes sense. I'll take the diff apart at the weekend and oil it up, check for damage or owt like that.
