Hi all :)

My 3 contract was up end of march... perhaps its time for a change from my trusty U990..

Been looking at the HTC and various reviews online and it seams like a good phone, plenty of features etc, but ive yet to see it in the flesh so to speak.

Anybody have one of these on a 3 contract, what are your thoughts.

Im particularly interested in the GPS side of it, do 3 supply any sat nav software with their HTC's, are there any costs involved when using said GPS on 3?

I had a TyTnII but on O2.
Used it for a week. Initially I was all "wow" and "ooh" about it. The GPS works a treat and the WiFi is great, streaming videos etc.

But after a week, I thought... ugh its slow, impractical to use quickly on the go compared to a standard mobile phone.

Not sure if you heard but there is some driver kerfuffle with a lot of HTC devices including the TyTnII (www.htcclassaction.org) and apparently the device is operating at a much slower speed than it should be due to crappy vga drivers, thats the theory at least anyway.

The device is good. Its functional, but its not practical in my opinion.
Not to mention extremely chunky.

If you dont mind the size and have patience go for it.

Personally, when I want to make an apointment in a diary I want it to be nice and quick, with the TyTnII the experience just seems so sluggish.
Nothing beats a good old fashion diary I guess :D

Cheers Cavallino, I have read about the issue with the vga drivers, but the review was an old one, I had hoped this was resolved by now, guess its not?

To be honest, I dont need most of the functions, Im just a hardware geek and it looks cool, and the specs claim a better battery life than my U990? Only features i use on my phone are calander, email and internet (rarely), camera and thats about it... But its not to say i would not use more and the GPS is of great interest as my cheapo Lidl sat nav sucks.

No worries mate.
As a device it looks ubersleek imho and has great potential.
The GPS on it is divine. Used TomTom 6 software and it worked a treat, if anything, better than the TomTom Go that I have.

But as I said, it is rather bulky in size and not the most practical device imo.
And a word of warning. The Camera on it, despite being 3MP, is not the best. In darker areas (indoors) the screen refresh is sluggish as hell, we're talking to the point of 1 or 2 frames per second or something.

Im seriously considering getting an iPhone, assuming that I can get it on my business contract!

I was partly tempted by the Iphone but got the U990 instead as it had better features for my needs and i would be worried about a V2 coming out in the future that added 3g.

If you have the bottle its always worth flashing to a different ROM, these usually run much faster than the standard ones, in my experience anyway..

I am getting a Tytn 2 next week, they are a bit bigger than your standard mobile but the functionality is worth the trade off IMO.

And how cool is it playing Warcraft 2 when sat on a plane/train ;)

I currently have the Artemis running WM6 and TouchFlo.

Very very fast.

Harry, Is there a newer firmware out that adds the display driver and improves performance, ive not found anything about it? Gonna do a search now, but in work so results can be limited.

Oh yes newer firmware might actually do the trick (I didnt want to do that cause I was afraid of bricking my TyTnII or something :))

Good luck UKD!

I've only found one forum mentioning a new firmware, last post was the 2 april 08, but nobody has mentioned any fixes... in fact a few had GPS issues after updating...

I'm hoping the next ROM upgrade to include WM 6.1 and the graphics improvement patch, so I suppose I'm skipping this one unless forced to.

I am running a 6.1 build on mine it is also unlocked (dutty's cooked rom). I have had HTC phones since the first SPV, e200, c500, m5000, tytn and tytn2. I got mine in early November, so its lasted pretty well for such a well used highly featured device.

The flash i did was simple enough, as they always seem to be. Its much zippier now, and i am very happy with it. (i was at first anyway!)I only really flashed it to get the HTC homescreen, as it looks much nicer and has better features.

Great device. Its a good phone with the right features on it too. I dial mainly from my "Favorite People" section of the home screen. Dialling numbers is quick on this rom too :)

Ive had my Tytn 2 for around a week so far now.

Yes its abit of a brick size wise, but on the coolness front nothing really beats it! Especially the slide out keyboard.

Ive not had any issues what so ever with the speed of it and havent had a single crash either.

Im running KaiserTweak, HTC Home Customizer & Clear Temp on mine as well.

Mine is a totally region free one though.

I wonder what CE version the next Windows Mobile will be based on? CE 6 has been around for a while now, and it seems to be pretty good. I would hope mobile 7 is based on it, at least.

Malt_Viniger mate, is that the firmware your running?

Dutty's WM6.1 Hybrid UC Public Release.

Actually its not is it lol

You must be running this one: Dutty's Official WM6.1 5.2.19199 UC RTM

I know of the driver issue but to be honest when I have used a tytn2 I have not seen any of the slowness that the videos I have seen show.

Malt_Vinegar do you know what the difference is between:

UC compliant & UC RTM version of the cooked ROMS?

Reason I ask is that there appears to be a couple of newer versions that what your running at the moment:
# 2008-03-28 Dutty's WM6.1 Hybrid UC Public Release
# 2008-03-22 Dutty's Official WM6.1 5.2.19716 UC compliant
# 2008-03-07 Dutty's Official WM6.1 5.2.19199 UC RTM (version your running?)
# 2008-03-04 Dutty's Official WM6.1 5.2.19716 UC RTM - 2x variants

No idea to be honest, I am very happy with this rom, and will not be looking to change it.
I would do the latest if you are running a basic rom.

Dutty's stuff always seems top notch.

Was the flashing easy enough to do, any backup needed in case on bricking?
Does the Dutty rom remove all branding and unlock the phone, guessing it does?

Took about 10 mins, i think i had to flash the radio to a special one first, then flash the rom, then apply the updated radio, and it was unlocked and flashed.

No branding, HTC features enabled :)

Sorry for sounding dumb, but im still reading the post on XDA,

Did you flash via PC or the SD card?
Did you flash Hardspl first ?

Sorry if these are silly, but i want to be sure before i get this phone and mess it up LOL
