nikon d40 not focusing properly

hi guys, ive got a nikon d40 and the af doesnt work properly, most the time it doesnt focus on stuff (bleep and light up red in view finder) and then when it says its ready it takes rubbish blurred pics, this is on all settings even auto. can anyone help i'm tempted to take it back to shop, can anyone reccommend me some focus settings ect thanks

Are you sure the blur isn't due to overly long shutter speeds?

nope its the same with a tripod, although i am gonna buy a IR remote, my mate thinks i might be knocking the tripod ever so slightly but im sure im not, and like i said the camera struggles to auto focus most times

also if do hdr shots they always come out sharp and perfect no bluring once coverted is it just the software fixing it?

Erm, might help if you post up a few examples. What are the pictures like using MF?

never used mf tbh, i always delete my shots which come out crap so i cant post. my mate has a d40 i will compare all my settings to his see whats wrong, he always get perfect shots.

dunno if this has anything to do with it but it did get dropped a while ago from about 4ft onto carpet

Hey,

I was out a few months back with a mate of mine who had the same problem with his D40. Camera was working fine for whole period, then all of a sudden it would just refuse to autofocus properly. He landed up doing a 'hard reset' on the camera (its tucked in one of the menu options). This resolved the problem. Still not sure what caused it.

Lastly, I know it sounds stupid, but have you definately got the switch on the lens set to AF?

hi mate thanks for that, i've reset it and updated the firmware seems much better
