Why do we let the government walk all over us?

It is all very well to blame the government and tax but lets not forget that the price of oil has increases too.

Shell made £13 billion profit with petrol and diesel accounting for a multi billion pund figure.

Then there is OPEC which quite simply is a cartel in control of the worlds oil.

It is not as simple as the government imposing fuel duty.

Without tax petrol would be around 35p/litre, even with the price rises. The tax rate is somewhere around 300%

Hmm, another ill-informed post.

To quote myself:

That's fine, I don't mind oil rising as long as tax decreases...

How is it ill informed?

You can't deny the obscene profits that oil companies make or the fact that OPEC is a cartel.

Yes fuel duty is part of the problem but it is not the only problem is it?

You won't see blockades by HGV drivers anymore.

The government stated that anyone blocking fuel depots will now be charged under the prevention of terrorism act along with their vehicles confiscated and HGV licenses revoked. No more protesting!

I guess the counter argument is that revenue is needed. If we take away the tax on fuel then what will be used to fill the gap?

Its just too easy to tax fuel because 1. people need their cars (price inelastic) and 2. the environmental argument.

So either you cut spending ala 1980's Conservative government and get SLATED by the media and public OR you put up another tax. Now theres not a lot else which is as inelastic as fuel so the alternative will probably hurt people more and affect demand for it in more damaging ways. OR you put up income taxes, either NI or Income tax and we know how much people like it when the government takes away their wages...

I'm not supporting the government here, just, well things have to be paid for. You can't have it both ways.

Eh? the graphs show that tax + duty are the biggest contributors to fuel costs..

I was saying that I posted the text of the amount of fuel duty on certain types of petrol, someone else posted the graphs, I was just trying to explain why I edited my post.

Hmm, another ill-informed post.

To quote myself:

So in the last year of the tories the tax on fuel was 77% of the forecourt price (42.9p out of 55.8p) and now it is 67% (63.7p out of 95.1p)?

So in fact this government has *cut* the tax on fuel.

Thats enough to give them my vote....

Oh I agree they make money, lots of it. The government make more though, for what reason? "To save the earth yadda yadda yadda"

I still need to drive to work? so it solves nothing. I would be happy to pay a duty if it went straight into the fund to find a new energy source? How do people feel about this?

I haven't said otherwise but would it not be prudent to address all the issues?

How do you plan to address the issue of OPEC being a Cartel and speculators buying into commodoties as a hedge against the falling dollar, artificially inflating demand, then?

But why do motorists need to be penalised so heavily? drop the taxes and find the revenue elsewhere? Motorists suffer stealth taxes which the government cash in on and the money goes to all the wrong places.

See this is what gets to me. You have the government labeling someone that is protesting over the price of fuel as a terrorist WTF. So if you speak out against the government and take actions your a terrorist and on top of this your HGV licenses will be revoked. So people that are generally struggling to afford to run there company or pay the bills are bent over again and again. When will people see that this government isnt run by the people (as it should be) its being run by a small group of people that dont have to worry about money.
