Good morning all.

I've been googling away today looking for events for the coming year. I asked this question last year and got some good feed back from your guys so thought I would try again. I'm trying to build a portfolio of events and different photography. So what are the best events this year which some of you can suggest? I'm open minded to anything as long as I can get good results photo wise; so really the events can be anything. And distance through the UK isn’t really a problem for me.

Cheers

In terms of "events" What kind of events are you interested in?

Sports?
Wildlife?
Exhibition?
Shows?

Some stuff i'll be doing this year,

Santa pod - both main events (May/September)

Farne islands trips (seabirds etc)

DTM (german touring cars) at some point

Burghley horse trials

Donna Nook seal breeding colony

Will probably get up to no end of other stuff inbetween, events can be a real pain for serious photographers without media passes, as your stuck with the crowd.

If you can get up to Edinburgh during the Fringe Festival it's a fantastic opportunity to photograph a large variety of street performers

Bristol Balloon Fiesta ... August every year.
Location: Ashton Court, Bristol

There is an evening 'nightglow' where all balloons are fired up and lit up in the evening. All balloons lift off on saturday and sunday early morning. Two great photo opportunities.

Bristol International Kite Festival ... August every year.

If you want to practise sport photography cheaply then ask the local amateur boxing club if they would like a photographer for their shows. Most clubs have 2 shows a year plus the championships are hosted by local clubs. Many clubs are crying out for good skilful locals as the few on the circuit only photograph the major competitions. Many of the parents gladly pay a few pound per photo of their youngsters. The photographer made over £100 from our last show and was only there to practise and wasn’t planning on selling the photos until many people came up to him and requested some of their kids.

Getting the perfect shot is pretty hard and requires a great deal of skill and a bit of luck. Some shots have such good facial expressions.

Any type of event. Its not so much about the event its about learning the skills and producing the pcitures to match. So as long as i'm learning and getting good photos I dont mind. Santa pod sounds and looks cool thou

In terms of an actual event, I really enjoyed Burghley Horse trials, lots and lots of opportunities.

I'd say you any event you can find is worth taking your camera to
