Work not paying me agreed wages or giving me any breaks! Help.

I work on VDU as I am an emergency call taker for the ambulance service, and I do 12 hour shifts, I get 3 15 Minute breaks as well as one for a 30 Minute lunch break.

You're being taken for a mug, get out mate :)

those breaks are because of the time you are working and the nature of your work. it is not comparable here.

Not really, because some shifts are dead, I still get the same ammount of breaks..

you get them because they are scheduled as they should be, because you have the potential to be busy constantly. it is not comparable.

Yeh, I see what you're getting at..

Better to use my old job I suppose, you either had 5 Mins an hour for a Ciggy, or if you didn't smoke you were allowed to take a 30 Min lunch after 4 hours (As long as it was an 8 hour shift)

Im guessing Im not the only one who appreciates the irony that their front-page has a guitar for sale that costs 3 months of the OPs salary?

And they're too tight to pay commission?

Best getting shot of them tbh. The break situation is pretty standard and to be expected but everything else sounds like they're taking the mick

Have you seen the cost of the the Piano's yet??

I work mostly in admin - but still work on shop floor at busy times where personly I sell about £4000 - 5000 of goods per week. Our standard music software is £600 which I sold a few last week.

but what was the cost of purchasing them to sell on? yes they may be selling for a lot, but only some of that is profit.

Unless we get discount (eg 50-60% is quite often) I multiply cost price by 1.76.

and the actual profit on that is ? (based on the fact it is sat in a store for so long, or do you have quick turnover of things like piano's)?

Our turn over is fast - we continually ordering in new stock - 600 to a 1000 books alone - I see many pianos being taken out of the shop too.

We are the bigest music shop in the UK. Theres not really much competition.

You know this kind of info but barely get minimum wage? They are taking the ****. My advice, give them an ultimatum; a pay rise and scheduled legal breaks or you leave. Given that they begged you to return previously they should listen to you, if not, their loss.

so you stock the pianos? thats some storage cost there, taking down profit.
what is the actual profit margin? im guessing its not as high as you like to think it is.

The building they own is massive - we store hudreds of grand pianos. They dont pay any lease on the building either - they have owned it for the last 150 years. She shop alone is 5 floors.

but they pay insurance / heating / electric / wages / water / sewage / security etc

You can strike off security and heating off the list lol - the place is as secure as a ripped paper bag. The lock on the front door does not even work properly lol.

You be suprised at big companys skimping on things...

I worked for a major concert hall in Manchster as stage manager... they didnt even have a working fire alarm for a long time.

To sum up -
  • You are being given a longer break than they legally have to give you.
  • Temperature in the workplace should not be below 16C according to the HSE
  • You aren't being paid enough for that hassle, go elsewhere.
  • What exactly are they giving as a reason for the lack of commission?

stage manager to sales assistant on 12k....

Well I had to leave stage management to care for my sick mother for a few years who was serioulsy ill. When that finnished I needed work fast - I took the first job offered so I could pay my rent.... Sometimes life stinks.

so find another job? it was one just to pay the rent. you could earn more in maccyd's.

To sum up -

[*]What exactly are they giving as a reason for the lack of commission?
[/LIST]

First reason was that I have to see off probation period (3 months) before commission is added.

Second reason - they moving me to different department meaning basicly 2nd probation grrrr

Third reason - They are reviewing pay in the company - come back in a month and they will award commision

Fourth reason - It can take upto 2 years before commision is added

Fifth reason - Im rubbish at my job - so no commision!

Fifth reason is given to every member of staff I know that has been offered commision. They all leave at this point.

We go thru 4 new members of staff every 4 months on a shop floor that uses 6 staff members.
