Why buy a HD TV?

The more I read, the less I understand.

So 1440p is better right?
:p

j.m. For your info, I've always regarded your knowledge on these forums as both broad and impartial. I guess sometimes (like this thread) 2 people can't understand each other's arguments when not talking face to face

1440p is better than 1080p, but there are no TV's that have a 1440p resolution let alone anything that is broadcast at 1440p! :D

Thank you i appreciate that. i wouldnt ever claim to know it all but what i do i know i make sure i know it through and through:)

HDTV's are meant for HD content, not SD stuff. Thats why SD stuff will never look as good on an HDTV than a CRT. Its because the SD broadcast needs to be upscaled to either 1024x768, 1280x720 or 1920x1080. A broadcast at 480/576p will never look great on it.

On my samsung you can choose to watch everything at 4:3 ratio and it looks better. Even SKY+ non HD looks better on my Sammy so I don't agree that 480 doesn't look better it can if you watch it at native res.:o

That my be. But then your not using the screen size that you paid for. I want an HDTV that will handle SD stuff almost as good as a CRT and by the looks of it Plasma is the way to go in my case for me.

ooooh thats a touchy subject. be sure you know the aspect ratio of most films out there in hd - 2.4:1. on a 16:9 screen you're already not using roughly 25% of the screen area due to the visible black bars when watching 2.4:1 content.

Yea i realised after i posted lol! What i should have really said is for SD stuff like mentioned on Sky, the programs fill the whole screen (im sure there are some that have bars along the top and bottom, but i haven't actually seen any?).

But yea your right, movies are shot differently so you will lose a far amount horizontally. I dont mind it much, but 4:3 would really put me off on a 16:9 screen.

no, i do agree somewhat. i know 2.4:1 is the way its shot so im told i shouldnt complain blah blah its the way the director intended blah blah......but i cant help feeling i want that 25% of extra screen space being used. 1.8:1 films such as apocalypto are are much better compromise i feel. and you are right about 4:3, its just so wrong :p

The reason why CRT's are so good for SD isn't really about resolution, CRT just produces a better image than other techs.

You want yourself a constant height front projector setup.

Just stop arguing and buy a Kuro or a Fujitsu screen and enjoy the supreme picture.

Then get a crappy cheap LCD tv or PC monitor to use as a monitor. Enjoy the movies and console gaming on the plasma, and keep the LCD in the study for PC use. Or just buy LCDs all over the house, and run down the street skipping shouting out at the top of your voice:

COME LOOK AT MA 1080p 3000000:1 contrast 10000hz dynamic range spacial lighting optimizer tvs !!!!!!!!!!

/end :D

Classic :D

Exactly what I’ve done, got a nice Samsung 225UW LCD for my pc and a 50' Sammy HD plasma for SkyHD and the Xbox 360, I personally wouldn’t choose LCD for normal TV viewing the images are so poor compared to the plasma offerings.

My parents have a Panasonic Plasma that was rated really well for SD. Its about 45 incher. SD quality on it looks dodgy compared to CRT. They have both freeview and Virgin cable. It is 1024 x 768 (I think) and I have run HD stuff through it and it looked good but certainly not "night and day" difference. I have also seen numerous HD setups with HD sources and have never thought that is absolutely amazing.

I have been to the What Hifi Show in Bristol recently and there was nothing there that was "night and day" either.

The truth. I think there's far too much hype around HD atm. The only reason I'd really consider it is for Xbox/PS or living room computer use.

You seem extremely hard to please then. The Bristol show must have had on show some of the best TV equipment available on the market and you still weren't happy.

If that's the case, and there's nothing wrong with that, then I definitely recommend you save you money for something else and keep your matsui TV and £15 DVD player
