So can I display 720p content on my 19" widescreen TFT?

I currently have a 19" WS TFT at 1440 x 900. I'm toying with getting a 24" panel for 1080 but I was wondering - ignoring HDCP compliance, is it true that I could get a blu-ray player and display 720p content on my current screen without it having to upscale at all? If so, I won't bother with a £400 BenQ thanks very much!

Cheers.

720p = 1280x720
Screen = 1440x900

It will have to up scale to fill the screen. The only way you'll get HD without scaling is displaying 1080 content on a 1080 screen really (or a 720p on a 1280x1024/800/768 screen).

I don't know how HDCP would affect you though.

But both my width and height resolutions are greater than the W of 1280 and the H of 720 of 720HD, so why would it have to upscale?

Because if it didn't you'd have a 1280x720 image in the middle of your screen and 80 black lines to the left and right and 90 black lines above and below.

If you want it to show full size, then those 1280 pixels have to be stretched/scaled to display on all 1440 the screen is made of.
