South Africa: Deputy Safety and Security Minister Susan Shabangu has told police to ignore regulations and shoot any criminals who threaten them or the public in an effort to bring the massive levels of violent crime under control.
The country's rates of violent crime are amongst the highest in the world. 20,000 people are murdered each year. Shabangu says she will not tolerate pathetic excuses for not controlling crime, telling officers they had guns and were to use them.
Shabangu told the police that "you must kill the ******** if they threaten you or the community. You must not worry about the regulations. I want no warning shots, you have one shot and it must be a kill shot."
