My 9800GTX experience (back to 8800GT)

Have to say crysis and WIC are the only games I cant play at 1920x1200 with my GT

Only game that it really doesn't handle at 1920x is crysis - there may be other games I don't play...

COD4 1920x with all settings maxed rarely drops to 40fps (start of some missions with large views over cities, etc.) and is mostly around 80-120 even in firefights.

Oblivion, ETQW, BioShock and several other fairly recent games that I've played all run acceptably on an OC'd 8800GT at 1920x with max settings and 4x FSAA - tho admittedly its much better at resolutions below 1680x.

Aye I see what you are both saying. It's playable and gives decent FPS but sometimes could do with a little more grunt from what you say Rroff. So it's usable to a good degree @ 1920x1200+ but if you wanted a better experience you'd want a GTX for that resolution. I think if I got a GT or GTS at my resolutions I would feel it a little due to using the GTX overclocked at high resolutions with AA,AF on. If I started with the GT then I might not be as fussy. If you feel the burn sometimes Rroff @ 1920x1200+ even if it's minimal then I'd most likely feel it too.

Best of all we're still waiting for Easy to explain himself. J.D can you provide any insight into it?

Not got a clue. I've just read through two pages of the OP's posts and searched threads created and I can see none relating to a vehicle of any sort or in the motoring section for that fact.

If he meant a GT as in car then that's even more confusing as it's totally tangent:confused:.

I put cars instead of cards :p

But LOL. Easy come on I'm getting tired I want an explanation. The crowd are waiting.

I went for the 9800GTX as I was desperate for something new to play with, my o/c BFG 8800GT OC could handle pretty much anything apart from crysis at my gaming res of 1920x1200.

Big disapointment was the mem wouldnt go above the stock 2.2ghz, core I got up to 790Mhz.

My 8800GT was clocked as per sig, for a single slot cooler I think I got pretty lucky with this one.

3dmark06 went from 14000 to 14800
Crysis (1280x1024 high 64bit dx9) went from 44.37 to 53.74
World in conflict (1920x1200) went from 22/11/42 to 23/11/47

In short I was very disapointed, I guess I have been spoilt by the good overclock I got out of my GT, that coupled with the very poor ram overclock of the 9800gtx

Its NINJA.

was a typo.

See, you all miss me....lol

when I'm away

OP what did you expect?

8800 cuts through

and upgrading from 8800 GT to 9800 GTX means you have money to waste or just after the upgrade

I've read all through the thread Easy has had his last shot of alcohol for the night, said something totally random and went to sleep happily knowing he's leaving us all in a stupor :D.

Ahh cars. Maybe. (i was going to edit my last post but your post popped up after I edited so I just moved the text here instead).

Sorry I cant let this go in case anyone is thinking of buying a GT and games at 1920x1200, it really does handle all games without a problem except crysis and wic (which I think may be more cpu limited as the upgrade to 9800gtx gave practically no improvement)

I run fraps so I know my frame rates at this res.

Well, both you and Rroff have different views and it's opinionated. What you may deem as acceptable might not be the same for others.

I've heard of GT users report that 1920x1200 is fine for gaming and then I've heard that some don't rate the GT at this resolution. I've also heard of the boost they got with the GTX at high resolutions.

Rroff feels as it's best at 1680x1050 with the AA he uses. You deem higher resolution is perfect for you. So it seems as if Rroff like many others wants a totally smooth gaming experience. Hell, I lower my resolution if I think it will help me achieve what I want. Just because you have a different view there's no need to try and force your opinions when there are multiple reviews of the card to be seen by all. Just about everybody checks benchmark reviews and that will be the decider. Not me or you debating over what is playable at what resolution. A GT owner reported what I felt as true. 1920x1200 in a few games perfectly and others feel better with max settings at 1680x1050 :).

Of course, and applies to all of us.

What I deem acceptable is typically 60fps dropping to 30fps in heavy firefights.

I get this with TF2 at 1920x1200 8xMSAA, with Jericho I also get this but cant enable FSAA, with COD4 I get this with FSAA

Thats the difference - personally I like 45fps minimum (60 average) if I'm playing singleplayer and 100fps minimum if I'm playing multiplayer (which is usually achieveable as I drop some settings anyway to make enemy players stand out more)... I also like my FSAA (tho 4x is enough for me) so in a game like Jericho at 1920x the 8800GT simply wouldn't be acceptable - whereas in a lot of other games it is.

so the moral here would be if you have a current 8800 gt/gts/gtx stay with what you have if you havent moved to an 8800 yet dont bother with the 9800gtx and go for either the 8800gts g92 core or the older 8800gtx/ultra

Ahh I notice Easy still hasn't explained himself. Typical :D

Dons please do not delete my posts when I have done nothing wrong. I suspect Easy was loving the RTM button long time because he couldn't explain himself and that's the reason for the deletion. But at least delete his posts as well.

Managed to squeeze 800/2350/1900 out of my GTX now, some reason it has just decided to day that it'll be artifact free at 800 core, whereas Thur/Fri it wouldn't go over 765... how odd...

On taking your word you do actually own a 9800gtx;) then clearly your problem with artifacts is not down to the core speed. Far more likely it was the memory or shader at its limit as nearly every gtx clock unless really u/l would hit 765 no problems going by other ppl's o/c scores and online reviews.
Mine personally maxes out at 818 on air.

It would artifact at anything over 765 even if I left the shader and mem at stock.

Don't know why it has suddenly come round into being able to run at 800 core, maybe the TIM has bedded in or who knows what, but it is now ATI Tool Artifact free at 800 core.

The Shader and Mem clocks however will not budge, 10Mhz higher on either and I can start to see yellow dots appear on the ATi Tool test (even though they arn't detected as artifacts by the program).
