I've been looking about for a possible solution for around .. ~£200 ... a powerful graphics card/s for a system i hopefully build in the summer. Looking at a few tests the 9600's perform poorly individually but pack a punch in SLi, outperforming cards like the GTS, GTX etc.

Seems like a good solution? Thoughts?

For a system with an Oc'd E6550, 680i mobo, 520W PSU, 2GB 800Mhz RAM for playing mainly COD4, Battlefield 2142, "some" crysis

From the benchmarks I've seen, 9600GT-SLI is very powerful, beating both the 8800ultra and 3870x2 in most cases: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_9600_gt_sli_performance/page9.asp

I have seen 9600GT available for under £100 in the past. In terms of raw power, it's arguably the best £200 solution around, but of course you need to weigh up the disadvantages of SLI (dependency on driver support, heat production, power consumption etc).

At the moment I thought the driver support for the 9 series was pretty top notch? Also I've planned in the Power consumption into the budget, and the case I've chosen, P182 .. probably, is suited for removing heat?

i think it's a good option... you sacrifice the opportunity to add in another card down the line, but then would you really do that?

you could go for a GTX and then SLI that, though, and i don't think the difference between the 9600GT SLI and the 8800 GTX is al that massive

I see what you mean, but surely the 620W psu i planned couldn't take SLI'd GTX's?

Hiya mitch212k, it would be dependent on the make of the power supply. Which power supply are you exactly referring too? I also notice you already have a 520 wattage power supply unit, which make is that particular unit? :)

aha... that's what i thought, but the Corsair HX620W CAN take SLI-d 8800GTXs...

i asked someone here, and they agreed (can't remember who at the moment - i think it was FireWizard) and i asked Yellowbeard (Corsair representative), and he confirmed that they can... shocking, but true...

Might it be worth having a look at 8800GT SLi as well. They're only around £15 more then the 9600s and would probably give a decent performance improvement? They would be noisier and more power hungry though...

Apologies for not being clear all, I haven't got any parts yet but I was considering a 620W Coolermaster Modular PSU, I think I may go with a single 8800GT for now, possibly SLi

Thanks for the replies :)

Im still using XFX Nvidia GF9600GT XXX (2 cards and used Tt Toughpower 1000w PSU) and enabled in SLi mode seem run so fast and I got very cheap price but cant tell you where I got from :)

Hi there

9600 GT's are £96 Inc. VAT on OcUK's This Week Only deals! :)

Whoa, hold on there. 9600 GT SLI beats 8800 GTS 512 SLI? Seriously?

I highly doubt that, where did you get that idea?

If only good clocking nvidia boards were cheaper :/ 9600GT SLI is so tempting but intel chipsets are just so derned good in comparison.

I have 2 9600gt's in SLI and they run beautifully. 35 and 39 idle temps with load of 52 and 55 overclocked.

Although i now need a pci card to power my other 2 monitors.
