Is XP 64bit faster than 32?

Hi guys,

I have XP 32bit on the system in sig. My CPU isn't the best I know, but since Crysis has a 64bit mode, will I get a performance increase by going to 64? It is my understanding that 64bit is better for encoding, is it better at decoding as well? (less CPU usage)

If you're considering buying XP64, why not just go to Vista? Much better program and driver support.

I installed xp64 a few days ago, seems fine - although boot seems a little slower, trying to get to the bottom of it atm.

with yours listed u should stick to xp, I had xp pro, upgraded my hardware to specs listed and it flys.

SO definitely staying on XP, do games like Crysis benefit from 64bit mode? (especially with all the physics going on?

about Crysis it is very CPU hogging, read about Crysis on the games forum DONT post a new topic about it , just do a Games, search topic state crysis. then you will know what I mean.

PS with XP u can have 4 gb memory but< u will only ever get to use ie windows that is, that the memory addressing in 32 bit will see what ever your GPU Has ie 512MB memory then take that away from 4 gb leaving under 3.4 etc gb which is what windows is left with and use.

That does not make no sense, your saying that if my graphics card is a 256MB card. Then that amount will be taken away from my ram, if so that is not true. Unless the graphics card does not have its own dedicated memory, 32bit operating systems can only see around 3.5GB of ram. So if you have 4GB then expect to only see that amount.

No, a 32bit OS can only address 4gb of memory, so if you have 4gb and a 512mb graphics card it has to address the 512mb graphics memory as well as any onboard memory chips you have in other components then your RAM, so it is often around 3.4gb or 3.5gb of RAM for someone with a 512mb graphics card. The fact that it has to address graphics memory and any other onboard memory is the reason people always have diferent reported amounts of RAM when using 4gb on a 32bit OS, as people have different size graphics card memory.

Actually if you had a 512mb graphics card, your utilised RAM would be significantly less then 3.4-3.5GB. Remember any DMA devices, caches and various other bits and bobs will all make a difference. With a 512MB graphics card, expect about 3.2GB of your RAM to be utilised.

Its quicker once i'm in, its just the boot.

Only thing that is different is the hard drive its installed on. The bar on my old 32bit install on the xp loading screen goes across 4 times the to the welcome screen etc. But on the 64bit its takes around 3 times as long... and i cant figure out why :confused:

I've defragged, gone through services, msconfig.

I use XP64

In fact my entire LAN has been converted to XP64 from 2K and XP

I have one Vista32Prem PC thats running well, and I have gone on my main PC to Vista64 for the 4th time and only yesterday moved back to XP64.

XP64 is by far the fastest and sleekest O/S I have had on all my PCs.

It runs 100% of everything I want it to and the only issues I do have with it, are TV Cards and WebCams but then its only a matter of looking when you buy these things to make sure that they are going to be supported. If they are not, then the manufacturers are simply not worth considering.
My webcam and TV Card work just fine by the way in XP64

I would never even consider wasting my time with XP32 again, and with Windows 7 just around the corner, even MicroSoft have realised what a porkie-pie Vista has been, so its kind of making me wonder if its actually worth bothering with?

Oh, and for your info Crysis and every other game I have ever tried runs perfectly fine in XP64, however, I am one of the many people who realise that crysis is perhaps the biggest waste of time ever and I have not bothered with it at all.
