spec me a 5.1 system for a number of things

badbob got suspended? :( He's the main reason I visit these forums! james.miller without badbob is like Jack Lemmon without Walther Matthau...

LOL!

On a more topical note, I keep seeing posters saying they have only £150 to spend - where does this magic figure come from? Surely it's better to see what your needs are before plucking a price out of the air and sticking slavishly to it.

If people had the same attitude towards TVs, they'd all have the non-branded variety with naff picture quality, purely because they were adamant to get a certain screen size. I suppose most people value their audio less than their visual, that's a shame in my opinion...

I agree. i wouldnt place such an importance on sound as some people do, but there's still s lot to be said for a half decent set up.

...so how long is the badbob ban...? :)

i dont know, its been a while now. im not even sure what he was suspended for. arguing with a mod i think. funny that, he argues with me about the same stuff all the time. for nearly a year and nothing was ever said about him lol

Well said !! :)
For sure it wrong to suggest a silly high budget when someone is working with much less, we all have our means to work with in....respect to that...but there is an ignorance and blindness (should that be deafness..LOL) to what is possible with audio and what it takes to achieve it.... Sadly we live in a "cost" culture, and quality becomes a word used without much understanding..... "I want top quality and I will spend a whole £50".....

As always I say, get off the forums, and down to the dealer, and LISTEN. At least understand what is possible, and find the level of "quality" you can live with..... THEN work out your budget and how to finance it....... If not, why ask what to buy, just buy anything that will do the job, if your not wanting to do audio properly.

that is spot on, and it should be applied to everything as well, not just audio. people are rarely willing to spend the time going to all that effort though.

ok guys im watching a set of the logitechs,

but also ive come accross a deal to pick up this set for £135, whatcha think ?

DENON DHT 1356XP 5.1 HOME CINEMA SYSTEM

any good ?

i do understand you get what you payfor, but you have to understand my 37" tv cost me £350 new, so being a set of £600 speakers wouldnt do them justice, i just want all the sound running through one 5.1 system, as the tv sound is poor at best

What gets me is you read of people paying say 1000 -2000 on a great screen, and not flinching at the idea..... suggest more than 500 quid on an audio set-up, 2.0 or 5.1, and you get shouted down by the masses !!!

I don't see link between screen size or cost and audio investment. I would always spend MORE on the audio than the screen... If you use a Skybox, hopefully with a digital out, then you can get great sound into the right audio equipment.... And that should be an affordable option.

OK maybe I should shut up, I have bits of wire costing more than the budget discussed here !!! ....So I am not "normal" ;)

haha yes, it frustrates me too. like buying the cheapest speakers they can find for their 1.5k pc they've just built lol.

agreed:p

that denon? on first thought id probably snap that up over the logitech speakers. but it'd be nice of somebody had some experience of the set before you buy it.

It’s funny how many thread get derailed in here :( The guy is asking for a setup with in his budget, no how much your wires cost or how better your system will be??

I would say the Z5400 fit your budget nicely :) have a look at a few review sites they seem to get good reviews.

if you dont like it you dont have to post?

i advised on the best way i think he could spend that budget. i also said a bigger budget would be a lot better. whats wrong with that?

i did offer something within his budget. didnt you read my post?

why do i keep having the same old arguments with people on these forums:confused: people constantly digging; 'you didnt say this, you didnt say that'. yes i did you just didnt read.

FYI i dont like the gigaworks either, there's nothing 'sub' about the subwoofer.

Like I say, we live in brain washed culture of cost driven decisions, normally driven by the media..... The point being made is go do your own listening, and understand what is possible in budget points. How can you set a budget, if you don't know what is possible or available.... OK I have budget of 2K, spec me a new Ferrari please !
There are those of us here who have experience of a wide range of budget, and try to suggest a lesser system ie 2 channel can be better investment than a 5.1 for the same money. It has to be worth the effort to try. Rather than being shot down by those with closed minds !!!

I never said how much the wire costed..... sorry if you have a problem with some one aiming higher...get over it !!!

Please don’t get you kickers in a twist, at what point what my post aimed specifically towards you? Just something I’ve noticed lately around here that everyone seem to derail these types of threads with low budgets saying something on the lines of 'You can’t get a 5.1 setup you need to spend XXXX'

I don’t even know you so please don’t accuse me having the same conservation and having a dig at you :)

you're as bad as somebody who crys 'fanboy'. threads dont really get derailed until somebody comes along accusing people of derailing at and intentionally stirring up the other posters. ironic!

just for you though, there's a yamaha htr-555 on the bay right now for £36 buy it now. couple that with a pair of speaker , little eltax or missions, and you have a cheap setup that is far more capable and expandable than those logitech speakers.

would you put that yamaha and a pair of b&W 601's infront of the logitech? i would and can can be done for £150. now ask your self, how much useful input have you yourself really given to this thread?

Someone aiming higher? What’s that supposed to mean? Sorry but you did say something on the lines of 'my wires cost more than most setups' well excuse me but does come very close to saying my wires cost xx amount. It’s all well and good suggesting setups more than the budget but not something like 4x the amount.

you know fully well that comment was a reflection on his own spending habbits, not a mine is better than yours retort.

As said I try to respect peoples budget, but like James suggests there are other ways of looking at the options.... I don't thus impose my budget on others, but suggest from my experience, over 25 years, that like James has just posted, there are alternatives that WILL sound better.

Well seems I have inputted some useful information as I seem to have had a response from you suggesting a setup within his budged wasn’t hard? :D Anyway just gets me that’s all, please don’t take my post as attack toward you as they wasn’t :)

Well, that might just be how much disposable cash he has?
Or perhaps that's the value he's put on audio for his setup.

To be honest, looking at his post, he seems more concerned at being able to unify all his sources into one set up of speakers than anything else and would just prefer to have something a bit better than the TV manages and would like 5.1, i'm guessing for films and games. 5.1 can add a lot to games that high quality 2.0 can't.

I'd personally rather have an amp and 2.0 speakers but then i've only compared £30 2.1 that I nicked off a mate and £400 amp/hi-fi at my rents house, so I dont really know how good or bad a £150 5.1 set up would be compared to £150 on an amp and speakers.
