First Tattoo, how much and what design?

Morning,

Right, having survived 33 years without being inked I fancy getting a small tattoo on my upper arm.

Now the thing I love most in my life is the mountains so I'd like a design based around them but can't really see how I could achieve this. I also have no idea how much one would cost.

So OCukers I once again seek out your knowledge.

Does wanting a tattoo and going for your full motorcycle license at 33 count as a midlife crisis? :p :D

Hmmm no, I'm going that way too, just because I haven't got round to it yet. I'm lazy.

As for the tattoo.. you could go down the Chinese character route but it's a bit cliched. Something like this though do your research beforehand.

You could also check out runic or hieroglyphs or something.
 
cool thread, I'm thinking of getting my first Tatto done as well, I'm 30 :o, been thinking about it for ages now but keep whimping out, recently though I'm really feeling the urge to get one done, I'm thinking of getting this done but on my inside of my forearm.

I've never had any tattoos but always wanted them. I've just never got round to it and can't decide on a design for myself. I'll get round to it eventually.
 
i know you said not to go down the chinese symbol route, and i'd agree... but here is the chinese symbol for mountain - it's actually quite cool

Have a few and would advise that if you find a design you like sit with it a few days and see if you still want it.
 
how about something along lines of the american indian/wolf/mountains type images?

price...it costs whatever, a good artist is worth it.
 
If you dont know what design you want, then you dont want a tattoo. If you have to walk in to the parlor and pick one off the wall then you dont want a tattoo.

Think about it carefully, your marking yourself to some sort of long-term/permanent degree, it should be important to you as to what it is. I want a tattoo and have wanted onefor about 4 years. I don't have one because I havn't found the image that i want, I wont rush and get one if its not right. really make the choice and be happy with what your getting than just rushing it. Walking out of there with anything thats "off the shelf" or just "done because i want one" will make you look sad.

Not trying to put a downer on it, get one and they are great, but in all seriousness be sure of the one you DO want :)

The moment I read the thread title I was thinking the same thing.

I would not get a tattoo now as you might regret it after a while.

I would disagree with that, and I know a lot of people who would. Nearly all my girlfriends have had tattoos, some extensively, and I have been to a number of tattoo conventions and met several artists. While some would agree with you, a lot would say that if you really want a tattoo, just get one and don't spend years thinking about it.
 
Id disagree again, but accept your point. Both allowed to have different views on it, and i know a lot of people that agree with my view (aswell as those that agree with yours ), like a lot of the people that posted in this thread also. Whatever he chooses, be it custom design or an off the shelf one, I still recommend thinking about it and being careful with his choice.

nope, or at least i hope not as i'm practically in the same place at the age of 31 :)

whatever you do:

1) DON'T get a tattoo in a script or language that you are not completely fluent in, especially if written words or letters in that language may have meanings that are dependant on vocal inflection, or you will end up with the cantonese for "hatstand dog bumknuckle" written on your spine

2) unless you're boss of your own company / business, check with your employer if the tat is going to be on show whilst you're in work dress, i'm not saying that they should have any say in this but you need to know if a spiderweb neck tatt is going to cost you your job

3) DON'T walk into a tattooists, point at a design on a wall or in a book and say "i want that one", design it yourself and if possible draw it yourself

4) pick your tattooist very carefully, research them and their past work as much as possible

5) when you get your bike licence, don't get a GSXR750/1000, Aprilia RSVMille or a Bandit 12

6) even if you do get one of these, don't get the onepiece leathers and helmet in the colourscheme that matches your bike, all they do is make you look like a power ranger

I would not bother tbh, I have two, from many years ago, they might have been trendy then, but are now faded and dull. Its painful and people tend to prejudge you if you have them in visible areas. I had the sense to have mine in a discrete place.
 
whats the font that those hispanic people use for the text they generally have over their body?
 
Spec me a permanent art solution. Seriously, if you don't have something in mind don't get it. I can see it now - you in 20 years time cursing the suggestor of your penis tattoo "Damn you newby3617!!!!!"
