I was toying with the idea of the 18-200VR but as most of my pictures are at the wide end of the scale I've had a change of heart.
Currently just using the 18-55mm kit lens but looking to get these in the very near future and need some advice:

Nikon 50mm F1.8
Either Tokina 12-24mm AT-X or Sigma 10-20mm.

Decent choices?

The 50mm 1.8 is a MUST HAVE lens.

Fantastic, fantastic, thats all I can say - and damn cheap.

The Tokina - I will be buying that for a mate soon, to take back to the UK for him (will buy from HK). Also seems like a decent lens, with a constant f/4.

Not as wide as the Sigma, but I would get it if I had spare cash.

Currently got my eyes on the 18-55 VR Nikon lens, also cheap, and has VR!

disagree the 50mm 1.8 is MUST have lens, but that does seem to be just me.. haha.

i shoot mostly wide on a D50 and use the sigma 10-20 as my main lens, though i have been eyeing up the 18-200VR mainly because it looks tasty..might be nice having a bit of extra range to play with.. and i am often lazy with regards to setting up my tripod so VR at 18mm is appealing to me. Are there any wider stablised lenses?

have you considered the nikkor 10.5mm f2.8 fisheye?

I love my sigma 10-20. only thing i don't like about it is f4. would love it be a bit quicker.

My use of my camera kit is for urban exploration, hence shoot wide all the time - the sigma 10-20 is considered the lens to have. Lovely and wide, ok build quality and not *that* expensive to replace should it break.

Consider the Nikon 16-85 VR or the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 if you want something wide but not ultrawide and want lots more reach at the longer end.

Sigma 18-50 F2.8 , Extremely Good, my walkabout Lens
Nikon 50mm F1.4, Super for Portraits

BTW: Both will be for Sale soon with my D50 :)

I agree with the 50mm being a must have, its always gonna be used at some point, since getting it, i think its left my camera twice.
