This question is age old now, but I'm wondering if I should choose the PNY Generic 8800gts g92 model:

Which is better, and, equally importantly, will the gtX work with my Enermax Liberty 400w PSU along with the spec in my sig?

me and my pay slip agree an upgrade is necessary.

GTX or G92 GTS would do considering the dual monitors. An 8800GT could do justice also. Depends what you're doing with it.
 
I was basically in the same boat 8800GTX/9800GTX/8800GTS. I sided with XFX 8800GTX, as it was such a good deal!

Remember you can never have too much computing power:D
 
I am also trying to decide. At the moment I've a 8800 GT 520MB which in my case is a lousy overclocker and has not always been that stable at stock. I can sell it for £90 and buy the £146 GTS which may not sound like much of an upgrade, but with a decent overclock could be worthwhile. The GTX would be sweet, but it just may be pushing my 480W PSU too far and I only game at 1680 x 1080.
 
Went with the GTS. For one its 20 quid cheaper (i'm a student, lol 20 quid is a weeks worth of munch and travel).

Main thing was power, I really don't want to have to upgrade my brilliant Enemax psu for the sake of largely unnoticeable performance gains with a gtx. And i'm only playing at 1440x900 so... :P

Only £5.88 difference but I see your point about the PSU.....

Only running one hdd / one optical, oc'd cpu but it draws relatively little power. Went for the gts because you don't need twin 6 pin plugs to power the beast, only a single one compared with the gtx.

No review site found easily on google seems to benchmark the psus that most people use, only mid-power psus (500-600watts) or higher, and i bet that the majority of users won't be up to either of these levels yet.

So i'm going on common sense and the opinions of others on here :D. I doubt my spec + a gts will draw more than 360-85 watts even on load, and i don't plan on overclocking because I reckon the performance jump from 1950 ultimate --> 8800gts will be quite satisfying enough :p.

The Enermax Liberty 400W ELT400AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU should power your system absolutely fine for your system.

To give you an idea of the power consumption of your system and taking into account that you will be running an Nvidia 8800 GTX:

A single Nvidia 8800 GTX under load will consume about 170 watts which equates to 14 amps. An Intel Q6600 overclocked to 3.3GHz will consume around 150 watts which equals to 13 amps. Now, add a couple of hard drives into the equation rated at one amp each and then some for the extra headroom, the above system will be pulling around 30 amps on the +12Volt rail. The Enermax Liberty 400W is able to provide 30 amps of the +12Volt rail which is admittedly cutting it close. However, remember the system that you are looking at running of the Enermax Liberty 400W power supply isn't as powerful so it should be perfectly fine. :)
