325 inlet manifold on a 328? I would have assumed the 328 had more power to start and was just longer stroke or something? What are the figures for the 323/325/328?

The 328's were restricted for tax purposes in Germany. It has more torque but virtually the same BHP. If you look at the inlet manifolds on the M52 328's they are visually smaller than the M50 manifolds. They are not just a straight swap though, as some work has to be done to the manifolds to allow them to fit.

Popular mod along with the throttle body.

well the 328 replaced the 325, so power output remained unchanged (well, it went up 1 bhp..)

the 2.8 was the same one that went into the E39 and E38
so it's not really a case of being restricted, it was a straight replacement

It is a case of being restricted - as has been explained. A quick look at the torque figures shows that it's a more powerful engine than that in the 325i despite the identical power output.

well surely all engines are 'restriced' then in one sense or another
they didn't bother having a more powerful engine in the e36 apart from the M3 though did they?

But they were physically restricted compared to its predecessor, its not just "restricted" in the sense that a sports-cat or forced induction would help power.

The intake manifold on the 323 and 328 allow about two thirds the CFM of airflow compared to the 325 manifold.

There were two M3 engines also.

i know, but i said apart from M3 ;)

anyway, afaik car registration tax in germany is based on emissions and engine size, not output.
so if it was restricted, it wasn't for tax purposes (unless, of course, it was for emissions) :o

Car tax in other EU countries is based on power output.

The 2.8 also appeared in the E39 and the E46 - and the replacement, the 3 litre M54, gained 40bhp over the M52B28 despite only an extra 20lb/ft...
