Hey, I just received a DVI > HDMI cable and I've hooked it up to my samsung 26" HDTV and the picture is far worse than when I had connected it by VGA.

i'm using the latest catalyst drivers/centre. Anyone have any pointers?

Cheers.

Dons- Please remove the thread. Apparently my HDTV isn't HDCP compliant ( ) so I wouldn't be able to play blu-rays discs through it anyway, even if I did sort out the bad catalyst settings. :(

Edit Edit - Ugh. Samsung say my TV is HDCP compliant. My graphics card is apparently HDCP compliant. What is going on re the blu-ray playback?

What DVI port do you have your HDMI Connected to? It shouldn't make a difference though. I have a 3870 X2 hooked up to my 1080P TV, and although I don't have a bluray drive in my PC (I have a PS3 though), I get propper 1080p over both DVI ports. It's still worth checking out though.

I've tried both dvi ports on my graphics card and altered settings in ccc. even with the correct resolution, the picture looks really bad compared to VGA.

How does it look bad? Like in what way? Are you able to post an example of what's happening?

It has a really bad ailising effect on it.

It looks like the resolution is wrong, the native for my HDTV is 1360 x 768, but CCC is putting it at 720p (1200x720).

The refresh options are limited, if I put it at forced 60, things look a little better, but then the resolution changes. I can't seem to get it at 1360x768 @ 60Hz at all.

I've given up on the thing. Waste of money on the cable.

I had a similar experience with my 3870 and Toshiba 32" LCD. I used the DVI to HDMI adapter provided with my card, and then used a HDMI lead to connect to my TV. The image looked washed out and quite frankly, unacceptable. Over VGA was the best option. Shame really, as over HDMI, the ATI card's carry the audio too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again :D

VGA lets you set the native resolution (e.g. 1024 x 768) but with HDMI you only get 720p/1080i/1080p etc. (so 1280x720 for example).

So Text/Desktop is going to look fuzzy!!

I wouldn't bother with HDMI unless your TV is native 720p or 1080p (just because it accepts 1080p doesn't mean it is a 1080p display!!) e.g. 1920x1080.

If I am wrong please correct me. I haven't connected up my PC yet with HDMI.

You are NOT wrong, totally agree 100%, may as well set it to it's max res rather than some odd res that looses a couple of pixels from each dimension, thus messing up what you see on the screen.

Native res 4tw to be honest...

Dont you need a special cable? The ones that you get for £3 or whatever wont work right for what you need.. You need the one with a built in box and they are like £80 and not worth it.

Didn't realise this, although thnking about it, it's fairly obvious.

1360 x 768 works perfectly (1:1 pixel mapping)

had the same issue with a pc I built for my sister. ATi3850 connected to a 37" LCD via HDMI. Tried for hours to get 1360x768 using powerstrip and all sorts as the picture was terrible at 720P. Eventually managed it by mucking about in the CCC but tbh I can't remember exactly what I clicked on. It was something to do with the multiple monitors bit anyway. All of a sudden let me select 1360x768 and the picture was stunning.
