I'm having a discussion about Mario Kart with someone on MSN, he seems to think that the SNES version was the best version, after that "they changed the whole dynamic of the gameplay and focused it all on powerups". But I personally think it was just a natural progression to make the game more fun.

What does everyone else think?

Mario Kart on the SNES is the best. I love the fact that the tracks are narrower and you can really skim the corners.

N64 Can’t honestly remember how many hours I played on this game but it was loads :D Only Golden eye was played more :p

I agree with your mate on MSN. The original struck just the right balance between racing and combat and, as a pure racer, it wipes the floor with all of them.

  1. SNES: I liked the coin system and the power-ups didn't stop the best driver from winning. Shame it's only two player.
  2. DS: Great selection of tracks and some genuinely interesting new features.
  3. GBA: Pretty much the SNES version with new tracks. What couldn't you like about it?
  4. GC: Not as good as the SNES version but generally acceptable. Beats the N64 version due to the insanity of Baby Park.
  5. N64: A disappointment after the SNES version but 4-player was great fun.
  6. Wii: Yay for internet play. Boo for too many power-ups and too many control methods.

Have I missed any out? :p

I knew as soon as I saw the Wii version that it wouldn't be as good as the SNES version, yet there were still tons of Nintendo fans on the mario kart thread getting over excited for it.

Having not played the Wii Version, the best versions are 1 SNES, 2 DS and 3 N64.

its gotta be the original snes version great tracks, no extra boring combo drivers n cars just straight forward fun

SNES for me, (Although have not played the Wii)
DS version is excellent but just too easy!
GC was by far the worst!

You can evade blue and red shells in the DS version making it by far the most skill based in multiplayer.

I meant from a pure racing, time trial perspective. The DS version still suffers from fat courses and overly nasty powerups (blue shell, 3 red shells etc). Don't get me wrong, I love the DS version, but still think the original was the most skill based racer. The snes version certainly had the best Battle Mode.

SNES: I liked the coin system

Agreed.

I found DKR better than all of them, but probably the SNES version followed by the Wii.

I wouldn't go that far, but it certainly pood on the racing in MK 64 and all over Double Dash. Awesome game :)
