It seems my other half wants me to donate my Fabia vRS to her to use for work, so with me not being too keen on the idea of running around in a 1.25 Fiesta I'm going to put it up for sale and get something else.

Budget is up to £5k. At the moment the main contender is a Mk1 Octavia vRS. Anything else I should be considering?

Requirements are:

Up to £5k
4/5 door
Quicker than my Fabia

Do your worst!

Mondeo MK2 ST200 or MK3 2.5 V6 Ghia X

Or if you want to spend stupid amounts on insurance a Scooby, but for less than £5k it wont be much quick than the mondeos

Impreza....be my choice but then I am going to say that (yes I got one)

accord type R

old BMW with a big Engine :)

Both reasonable ideas for 2nd cars, but those are some overpriced low mileage examples.

My XJ was 30% of that price, with more extras and the much better 4.0. Had double the miles though!

To the op:

How economical does it need to be? what mileage do you do? How old are you comfortable going? Any other requirements?

I quite like that myself for a next car.

At the risk of sounding like Fox, wouldn't paying £5k for a 9-yr old japanese car with basic interior be silly; or does the ATR fare better than the Octy performancewise?

If this is a second car, then surely the main criteria are that it is either attractive to look at or enjoyable to drive - not the quality of the interior?
