New family/company car needed 8K budget

What a Mondeo ST you mean?

theres a serious cost difference between the ST220 and the ST TDCI

theres also the fact the ST TDCI is an oil burner and only develops 155bhp.

If you just want a car thats not rubbish, the ST TDCI will do you fine

but the ST220s are now in the £430 a year Tax bracket. ST TDCI is £175 a year. ST220 gets about 20mpg in the real world. ST TDC is quoted at 47mpg but will probably get 40 real world mpg. But thats still double the fuel efficiency of the ST220.

Then theres the fact the ST TDCI is lower insurnce (grp 13 vs 16 for the ST220) so will be cheaper to insure as well.

.

Lies I am getting 25mpg out of mine and thats probably 75% sensible 25% aggressive. and I only really drive to work and back which is a 25 mile round trip so barely warms the car up.

well assuming you get 25 mpg. the quoted mpg for the diesel is 47, so you should be able to get say low 40s ?

so not quite double then, but not far off :p

ye but you get 20x the smiles per mile listening to the v6 :D rather than a clattery old tractor.

Need good mpg really.... ST TDCI looks like the best option for me (Diesel)

but you only do 10k miles a year? the extra cost of a diesel will limit your choices and nullify the fact you are buying a diesel as you're paying more for the car and you obviously dont do the long trips required to make the savings you need when justifying buying a diesel.

Sorry I associated diesel with being the cheapest option but with the price of fuel and the miles I do it may not be that much of a benifit?

How long does a tank last you around town SoliD?

I have seen some smashing ST220's in the 8 -9k range! I think silver would be my preferred colour!

A fair few nice cars linked above at pistonheads

Just got two examples from AT.

1) 2004 04 Reg FORD Mondeo 3.0 V6 ST220
Price: £7,995
60k miles
27.2mpg

10k miles/year at £1.10p/litre = £1836.02

2)
2004 FORD MONDEO 2.2TDCi 155 ST 5dr
Price: £8,295
52k miles
46.3 mpg

10k miles/year at £1.15p/litre = £1127.64

There is saving, at the cost of performance and OCUK BMW owner acceptance :p

you could work it all out exactly, but needless to say, doing 10K/year with depreciation taken into account, the diesel will probably save ~£500 a year.. whether £500 a year is worth a diesel over a V6, that's a decision you would need to make, sure enough a 3.0 V6 petrol will be more thrilling to 'race' in then the diesel...

edit.. OK, £700 in fuel, plus the extra tax/insurance, lets say £800 a year, that's a sizeable chunk in favour of the Mondeo..

I like the ST mondeo, the sort of family wagon I'd like myself..

doesnt apply in this case. the ST TDCI is a lower priced car, being only 155bhp its not really equivalent

as a result, there are plenty of ST TDCIs for about the same age as there are ST220s

and you dont have to do many miles for the extra cost of diesel to be worth it, especially with the fuel economy being so different. Look at the above.

the whole "diesel is only worth it if you pay more" argument only applies if you had to pay more for the same car. Say the 330D vs the 330i.

But the ST TDCI vs ST220 debate is more akin to the 330i vs 320D really.

like i said, the ST TDCI and ST220 are in different leagues running cost wise

if your happy with lower performance and a comparatively unrefined enginge the ST TDCI is the car you'd have if you've got your beige trousers on.

But the ST TDCI is nowhere near as refined as say BMWs diesel engines and sounds like a tank. If you can live with that, they're exactly the same as the ST220 on the exterior / interior.

just get a nice simple reliable petrol, my 2.0 is very torquey compared to any other petrol i've driven and i bet the st220 is very torquey aswell

as said earlier I get about 25mpg average, thats 12 miles to work on the motorway mostly and thats 75% of my driving and the other 25% is aggressive driving where the fuel economy really comes down. Get about 300 or so miles to the tank.

great value for money
cheap to fix (even though petrol manuals rarley break)
great to drive, still pretty chuckable
cheap insurance
comfy enough
well equipped
better then vectra, better value and nicer drive then passat

You could also argue that the vectra is most of those though....

Nicer to drive than a passat as well? I'd MUCH prefer a passat to a mondeo as would most people I think.

People say this and I wish it was true, becuase I'd love to buy something like an ST with 'serious miles' on it for nowt. Unfortunately it never seems to happen, they still cost thousands :(

only done 450k miles :) yours for 1000 quid :) no tax 4 months test :)

Has anyone installed a Parrot CK3100 LCD Bluetooth Handsfree Car Kit by themselves into a 2005 Mondeo before?

I can purchase it for approx £80 and do it myself or pay another £70 to have someone put it in for me? I'm up for putting it in myself as long as it's not too much bother?

Anyone put one in their Mondeo before? How long from start to finish? Also do they work as well as everyone says? I like the screen idea to see who's calling etc...

Thanks in advance guys n gals :)

hi DannyW Just out of interest how much on average are you getting to a gallon with your 2.0 litre mondy? I am changing my car next year and this is one of those that fits the bill. I only do around 7000 to 8000 thousand miles per year. For around the 6k mark max.

thanks.

Ive fitted three, 2 in 2 meganes and one in a Audi A4. They are simple to fit as they are universal. There are plenty of guides on the internet. It took me hour and a half to fit them first one then i got faster with the other two. They work very well if you set the mic up in the correct piosition. :)
