Just seen that a special edition of Civilization is being produced for the Xbox 360. At first I was horrified, but the idea is growing on me. It's a cracking Multiplayer game, voice comms would be awesome. Achievements would be fun.

Due for release in Early June this year. I think this one might be worth watching. Only problem I can see is getting players to sit through the rather lengthy MP games. After looking into this I think it's definately going onto my preorder list!

MORE INFO:
=================================================

The game is called : Civilization Revolution
Published by: 2k Games
Developed by: Firaxis

The game has been built specifically by the team at Firaxis for multiplayer on the Xbox 360. Some more info from a preview

"Civilization Revolutions has been built from the ground up for multiplayer by Sid Meier and his team at Firaxis. Currently, there options are available: Head-to-Head supports two players max, Team Play enables you and three friends to team and take on the rest of the civilizations and Free For All is an open campaign for four players. Whichever mode you opt for, it's possible to join and leave at any time, with the game's AI taking over your faction should you require respite.

When it comes to building your empire, the number of playable factions is exhaustive. However, we finally opted for the mighty Mongols before embarking on a quest for global domination against our three human opponents. Starting off with a solitary city surrounded by the fog of war, early turns took no more than a matter of seconds, with our modest holdings restricting our options to tweaking build queues (warriors, settlers or monuments), basic exploration and choosing what to research next from the massive tech tree.

A ticking timer ensures the action moves at a decent pace.
While the options weren't enabled in the build we tested, 2K informs us that the game will ship with camera and headset support, enabling you to see and taunt your human rivals. Apparently, Firaxis also plans to offer players a new map every week. As 2K's global events manager Karl Unterholzner explains, "You'll get a points ranking when you play these new maps so that you can see how you compare with other Civ players. We're also planning other downloadable content, which will probably include new scenarios and maps."

Wooo! More live vision taunting :D A new map every week? Pretty ambitious! Wait till you see the Achievements, finally a game which puts forth a real challenge.

"Civilization Revolution will reward your accomplishments with three tiers of achievements. Easy achievements will involve completing simple challenges such as making diplomatic contact with another faction, while Medium achievements will be awarded for deeds akin to winning the game with just one city. Finally, there'll be a smattering of Medal of Honour achievements, which only the most hardcore and dedicated players will be able to unlock. "

MP Civilization is lengthy but fun. There's nothing better than capturing your mate's city and then renaming it to "YouSuck Town". :D

There was a preview of the new Civ game in GamesTM magazine a couple of months back. It looked pretty cut down but it's going see a multi-platform release (360, PS3, Wii, possible DS/PSP).

Could be interesting.

Would this game make use of the Messenger Pad for renaming cities? Would make things easier.

Not too sure about the MP though, turn based games can be a bore.

Yeah I saw this. I'm going to hold of for some proper reviews after it comes out as it seems it could easily go either way.

Saw some previews last year. It seemed quite interesting actually (well adapted for console play too), and Sid Meier's actually said that this is the Civ that he's always wanted to make!

Yeah I saw that comment but wondered if he had a bit of incentive to say that.

I don't think it will work, not for a fan of the pc games anyway. Having long games is the best part of the game, a 4 hour session where everything evolves quickly just doesn't sound fun at all. Also from the screen shots having hardly any cities, units etc. I can see this being a decent game in its own right but no where near the franchises quality.

At least Civ 5 is going to be announced this year :D

Must avoid ever getting into this again, I don't think my marriage could survive a third addiction lol! :D

Seriously though I uninstalled conquests and threw the disc away and I've never even played Civ IV... soo addictive!

C&C is another

I'm thinking of pre-ordering this. I never could get into Civ 4 as my brain is getting on a bit and doesn't like fiddle farting with loads of buttons and icons all over the screen. I'm hoping this console version will be easier but just as engrossing.

i remember playing civ2 on the ps1, it sucked, the console just didnt have the cpu power, later on in the game you would wait 3-4 mins between turns,

With the amount of cpu power available in todays consoles i can see it being a lot better

The first Civilization was the best, The old Dos Game. I've never had as much fun on any of the newer ones. This looks to be a different experience entirely. And will hopefully be good

I loved the first one but there were obvious problems with it. E.g. moving a nuclear missile manually for 98 squares only to press the wrong button and end up nuking a settler instead of their capitol city!
