if an item arrives DOA, and you post it back to the shop, and get a refund, shouldnt you get a refund of the postage you paid for it and the postage to send it back?

No.

You are only entitled to the actual cost of the item.

Some places do refund postage or organise collection, but they are under no obligation to do so.

for goods – whether you require goods to be returned by the
consumer and if so who will pay for their return. For more
information on this see paragraph 3.55

If you want the consumer to return the goods and to pay for that
return, you must make it clear in the contract and as part of the
required written information – see paragraph 3.10. If the consumer
then fails to return the goods, or sends them at your expense, you
can charge them the direct cost to you of the return, even if you
have already refunded the consumer’s money. You are not allowed
to make any further charges, such as a restocking charge or an
administration charge.

i need some concrete evidence, because i sent a DOA mobo back to Ocuk, and only got the 29.99 plus VAT refunded (which they claim is £5, but its £5.32 and postage was £8.25

Postage paid at time of purchase

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 does not apply to the postage of goods because this is a 'service'. It only applies to a sale of 'goods'.

So when you purchase something online, you pay for the goods and then you pay for the postage. If the goods turn out to be faulty, you can get a refund for the cost of the goods, but you cannot get a refund for the postage because there was nothing wrong with the postage (and in any case, SOGA does not apply to postage as that is a service rather than goods).

Postage paid for return of item

As for the cost of return, this generally depends on what the terms and conditions say. If the contract is silent on this issue, then your general obligation is to make them available for collection.

Just send an rma webnote, tell them how much your postage was and remind them your eligible to get your delivery back too (I assume it was the only thing on the order?)
