So I want to learn how to service my own car and generally up my knowledge of car maintenance.

These threads containing engine rebuilds fascinate me and one day i'd love to have the skills to attempt something like that !

I have found this website (a yank site) that details quite a few procedures and looks quite good but I wanted to know if there are any other good sites that people have used / use for this kind of thing.

i tend to go on a good forum specific to the car I own, always the best way of getting specialist knowledge, most of which can be applied to other types of cars.

not sure of any generic sites though

Yeah theres a good Alfa forum but not that many guides with detailed pictures or anything like that.

Most of the posts assume that you know where all the parts are and what they are called (which I dont !).

Personally I find doing it better than reading about it. When I killed one engine in my car I bought a Haynes manual (or had it anyway) and read the section on engine removal...then went to the car, removed it, and refitted a new (different, lower mileage, second hand) one.

I don't get this 'I need a website to find out how to do stuff on my car' as all you'll end up doing is having the theory and no practice, and if you then decide to do it you will forget most of it due to one darn nut that won't come off. :p

If you don't want to jump in at the deep end, start off with small things, like servicing, so replace plugs, oil change, etc. that way you'll find out if you like working on the car or if you like the idea of doing it. :)

If you can't find detailed pictures, get the Haynes manual, work on the car, take pictures, document it, then you've created the documentation that others can then follow...it has to start with someone. :)

Fair points but the idea was to have some guides to follow while I actually do the work not just to read up on things and do nothing about it !

Am quite tempted to by a shed that needs fixing, an old Fiesta or anything really and fix it up just for the practice.

Go for something more worthwhile. ;) :p

As I said, the best place to start is on the Haynes manual, it has how to take a car from one big car piece, into it's many millions of bits. :)

Sadly they dont do a Haynes for my Alfa.

Well i am really liking the old classics at the moment.. may head over to Retro rides and see whats on offer !

Are old skool vdub beetles easy to work on mechanically ?
Problem with older/classic cars, is rust, you can easily sort mechanical problems, but rusk is very hard to sort if your doing it yourself.

I guess I need to read up on dealing with rust, it can occur on most cars at some stage in their life so would be handy to know.
