My grandad/slipper/barge mobile + scratch advice

Thats probably down to poor tyres TBH. They are not really any different from any FWD car. My T4 would spins the wheels up but you needed to be taking the **** with it to do it.

I have driven lots of cars on bad tyres (don't all company's but the cheapest ditch finders available on compay cars!).

The s40 just seemed very eager to spin the front wheels when pulling away, was 1.8 like the ops (was even similar age)

Thats not the experience Ive had with phase 1 and 2 S40s ive driven, certainly the N/A ones weren't powerful enough to worry the tyres.

Thanks, I do like my big barges, if I was to change again I'd probably get something of a very similar nature just with a bit more punch but I think limiting myself to less than 2L for a while is a good bet in terms of insurance

lol

Firstly, an S40 is not a barge. It's a small saloon!

At 21, I was driving a 1990 3.2 XJ6, Now that is truly a barge/grandad mobile!

As long as you have some NCB there's no need to limit yourself insurance wise though, bigger than 2.0 is definitely doable even at 21.

But still, props to not following the crowd and going for a silly 3 door little hatch! Looks like a nice example - sorry to hear it got keyed.

i cant see any undercoat showing through on that

i'd find somebody on a detailing / owners forum to have a go at it with a porter cable polishing machine. Get somebody who knows what they're doing and can take it to a safe paint level and stop. I've seen some amazing results of what people have polished out with them on detailingworld.

if once you've taken it it to that safe level, and looks too visible for you, pay him for his time and get the panel resprayed.

i had a kids bike handle make just such a mark, and got my local insurance approved bodyshop to do it for £100 cash. Was a good job too.

Well if you compare it to that maybe but in its own right i think it is :p

It's not a case of limiting myself per se, but I don't have a need for anything bigger engine wise at the moment so why not just get this one and save a few quid on insurance.

Haha thanks, yeh it sucks that people are that evil.

Can you feel the indent of the scratches with a fingernail?

yes :(

I think it's deeper than it looks on those pictures, I think i'll just take it to a local bodyshop, might go look on some volvo forums to see if theres anyone from this area that could recommend somewhere.

This car looks quality. I'm going to have to have a test drive. Looks like you get a lot for your money going by Autotrader and the insurance on the 1.8 is beating my quotes for the Accord and Mondeo .. *rubs hands*

Aye, I'm enjoying it muchly, any questions gimme a shout :)

Nothing really I guess if you just want to get from A to B but they share a lot of components with the Mitsubishi Carisma which was built at the same plant in Holland as a joint venture.

Get an S60.

The thing they got knocked for when they first came out was for harsh/crashy ride, this was addresed on the phase 2 cars(same as the OP) with modifications to the front suspension. They arent bad to drive but dont have class leading handling that went to the mondeo, that said not many people buy a four door saloon because it sets the world on fire. As for the build quality I cant see how they can be knocked they do high mileages without any major problems, are very well built and easy to work on when work is needed. Just look how many old ones you still see around without rust, thats a testiment to how good they are. They are bargaintastic for the prices they are going for now.

This is exactly it in a nutshell really, they're fantastic if they fit your needs, dont expect a speed demon but they're fantastic motorway cruisers, the comfort on long journeys is fantastic especially with adjustable lumbar support, great for my bad back (yes, at 21! lol). The handling isn't stunning but it's not the type of car that people should be buying if they want a speed demon to throw round twisties, so in summary if it fits your needs its a great car. :)
