Hi there,

Currently I have an LCD tv which runs at (1360*768) and a laptop which runs at (1280*800).

I want to get a 24" screen which a resolution of (1920*1080) because it will help with development in Visual Studios (way too cramped atm).

I am worried that my videos will look too pixelated when run full screen at this resolution though - do people notice that? Normal viewing distance for a movie is around 1.5m.

I also want to get rid of the LCD and just use the 24" screen but i need a TV aswell. I was thinking of getting an external hdmi freeview box and plugging that into the monitor, does anyone do that? - quality bad? pixelated?

Thanks for any info.

EDIT:

Would it be best going for a 22" screen with 1440*900 instead?

If you want more space for programming forget a 22, not much more rez than you've already got. I've found a 24" to be a fantastic productivity booster (even more so than when I had twin 17" LCD's).

As for watching movies/tv: anything that's not HD will look slightly worse off, how much depends on the quality of the scaler (either graphics card one or monitor one). I've watched some low-def stuff and to be honest it doesn't bother me that much, once I'm "immersed" in a film I don't tend to be picky and notice artifacting.

As far as screens go, most 24" LCD monitors are 1920x1200 currently (so you'll have black bars at the top and bottom when watching 16:9 content).

Hi mate,

I was in the same situation as you recently, where by a had a 23" HD tv at 1360x768 which I used a lot for movies/tv etc and a lot for programming/gaming. Decided to take the jump up to 24" 1920x1200 for a bit more real estate. Since having the screen I have not noticed a massive amount of difference with movies/tv being pixelated, but as said above it will depend on the scaler/your graphics card. I own an ATI x1950XT and the Hazro 24" (theres a thread knocking about here about it).

In all honesty tho, with a screen this sort of size for tv/movies etc you dont want to be sitting 2 feet away, I tend to sit in my bed which is about 2 meters away which seems to be a good distance. Otherwise I have half the screen productivity and the other half entertainment and television looks fine at half screen from close up.

Hope this helps!

Jack.

That was the general idea, because at the moment i have to get rid of tool bars and things like that too see everything.

Most of my movies are x264 codec at around 720*360 resolution wise.

Well my graphics card is a 8600GT-m (laptop) and i was planning on getting a Dell 24" monitor - what do you think the scaling will be like?

Oh year of course they are (I was thinking about 1080p tvs :p - got confused). Well I have the black bars at the moment, so its something i can live with.

My TV is currently a cheapy 27" Goodmans and was planning on getting a Dell monitor with my graphics (as started above).

Well I sit about 2m away at the moment with my current TV and about 4m away when im in bed, which is fine for the 27" tv, but i am slightly worried that when i get a 24" monitor, it might be too small.

How do you have tv connected to your lcd at the moment? Through the computer or an external box?

Thanks for the replies guys.
