New Raptor Review

Yeah looks good. Only downside is the 300GB capacity. Its much quicker than the faster 7.2K drives but for many people the storage size difference is better VFM than faster speeds.

This drive looks freaking ace, shame about the price tho, probably about £190 here i reckon. Really hope they make a single platter 150gb version, it would be slightly quicker for most things and obviously it would retail quite a bit cheaper:)

tempting, my 150gb raptor just isnt big enough for more than vista & a couple of games. I frequently find myself uninstalling something to install a new game :(.

The price though, im just not sure its far enough ahead of things like the samsung single platter 320gb disks to justify that.

true, i'd like to see comparisons with the samsung f1 320gb, wd 320gb, samsung 750gb to give a clearer picture. Remember these are reviews of non-retail drives though, they may be a little faster in the production drive.

All that i'm bothered about is the noise and the price, will be an expensive drive and 1 of the reviews said its still pretty noisy, no longer high pitch squeel but a clunking noise instead.

lol, it would melt if you put it in your laptop! you need some serious cooling for it like the cage it is in.

2.5" = would it fit in laptop? too hot or?
WD have stated that a) you void the warranty taking it off the heatsink thing and b) the power requirements are too high for a lappy.

On top of that it looks to be too tall to fit in most laptops.

Bah.
Give me a sub £100 1TB F1 any day of the week.
"Slower" in benchmarks, hardly so in the real world and over 3 times the capacity.

If you want to go fast then go the whole hog and look into SAS.

Was hoping for 15k and 32MB. :(

Looks crap also, no need for that heatsink as its still 10k.

I also dont see if it has Perpendicular Recording or not, that alone makes a HDD faster.

Completely agree. It's just a complete waste on the desktop and if you're looking for server discs then there are much faster options.

I've got 1tb disks in my fileserver, thats fine. What I need is a well performing, but not ridiculous on noise/heat disk for windows/games.

WD have hit the capacity with this disk, but the speeds arent too far away to justify it, like they were when comparing the previous generation 7200rpm disks with raptors.

As for SAS, its a real hell of a price jump to that, you need a sensible controller; as well as some disks that are a bit more than a raptor... and if your going to justify the cost of the controller, you need more than a couple of disks.
