Price check, Jaguar

My choice was for a car that was manual, and less then 60,000 miles, and could not find a a manual 3.0 in this range at the time

Thats becuase of your silly mileage restriction hampering your choice. 59k was fine but if it had 66k on it then... it would explode?

Well I wanted a car to last a few years without getting into major miles, also i wanted a car no older than 2003, the 2.5 fitted perfectly, thank you fox :)

Good call, it would have turned off never to work again had it gone into 'major miles' :) Can't have been a residuals thing as this thread has demonstrated even a low mileage Jag has no residual :p

I was not worried by high miles as such Fox, my prelude has over 130,000 and still runs fine ;) but i was not about to spend money on another high miles car, or one that would hit high miles in a year or two, get over it. My choice and im happy with it!

I had a 3 Litre S-Type some years back on loan and (I assume its the same lump??) it drank like a fish with dehydration!

I get around 25MPG round town, 30MPG ave and 37MPG on a nice run (2.5).
Will be interesting to see how much more the 3.0 uses, I've heard a few horror stories which says averages of around 22MPG?

Not exactly the same unit no. The 3.0 v6 in the X-type is a little more economical and has a little less power (230v240bhp). The difference in consumption between the 3.0 and 2.5v6 is fairly minimal.

Just like BMW, the fuel consumption jumps when you increase the number of cylinders, much more so than when displacement is increased.

For example, my 4.0 straight 6 in my XJ develops 245bhp and 290lb/ft of torque. The 3.2 V8 develops 240bhp and 235lb/ft of torque. Despite the extra displacement and torque of the 4.0, the 4.0 is more economical (still fairly thirsty mind)

We just tickled it around town and then some A roads last night and computer said 22mpg.

Those are some impressive figures, I've driven lots of 2.5 X-types (All autos) and never managed an average of above 27 even when trying to drive economically cos the tank was almost dry.

Yep, 23mpg average for mixed motoring. People I know with the 3.2 v8 get 20-21.

The old XJ's never have been very good 6 or 8 pots didnt really make much difference, funny this is I can get 18/19MPG ave out of my supercharged XJ. Silly when its got another 140BHP ish over the N/A, you would think its a lot worse. My old 3.2 Straight 6 would only get 21/22MPG

My old 3.2 straight 6 XJ40 averaged 23 as well. Got 27 on a run once though! The 4.0 has averaged exactly the same though it has done very little heavy traffic so far as I never travel at peak times at the moment.

At the end of the day, all Jag's are thirsty apart from the X type Diesels! and the values are dropping heavily for all petrol models at the moment. Even after getting mine, I've been watching prices on ebay and they've been going down down down. The Op in this place still got a bargain though!

I don't exactly drive my 2.5 slow, I change gear at 2000 - 3000rpm normally, but will go over 3000 when passing slower drivers, I average 28mpg over a Full tank every time, I do 32 miles to work and back every day, this is mostly country roads with a few long straights, I sit at 70mph most of the way :)
Beats my prelude by a good 8mpg so im happy :)

My point was that although i do try to drive economically, i'm not shy at putting my foot down, yet still get a reasonable mpg.
