I want 'club speakers'.

Check out The City in Cancun....they had what seemed like a wall of speakers. We couldn't stand closer than a few metres because the bass was shaking out our hearts, let alone just vibrating clothes.

It was truly immense.

Hi, sorry to hijack your thread im after the same thing.

Can bassbins cause damage to a house, say cause plaster from ceiling to fall off as in the clubs the floors obviously shakes?

For £500 do you think you could get louder quality speakers 2nd hand than these old ones my dad has im not sure if its a 12" or 15" driver they are 300w speakers but take special amps and are limited too 100w and 109dba. They weigh 30kg
We tried them out at a party and they were loud had people complaining 50m away. They are very clear but dont have the overpowering bass club sound. Im not after the pa style speakers and I already some amplifiers.

Or would the money be better spent getting a bassbin or sub to go with them?

Oh yeah I also have a pair of old cerwin vegas when they were much better built Im not sure if they are louder but they dont sound anything like as good they are 125w and 113dba and have 10" driver.

Its crazy how much power club speaker systems use, this club uses 60kw

http://www.crank-club.co.uk/sound_system.php

The room they will be used in is quite big at 500 sq ft - how many people can that hold im thinking around 80?

Thanks

The speakers you see in clubs - the ones that produce a HUGE amount of noise and bass. Can someone link me or provide advice?
JBL are ok, but they are overpriced IMO... Bose also charge thru the nose.

For maximum bass look for horns, brands to look for are Funktion 1 and Martin Audio. Danley are the cutting edge right now, giving the most output for a limited enclosure size:

Get a few of these for bass, but make sure you're house has thick walls. ;)

These are nice tops:

Also, you'll need some decent amps, you can't go wrong with QSC or Crown really.

If you need any advice such as crossover settings, fire away.

Also, this gear may seem expensive, but you can make your money back easily by renting it out, so it can be a good investment. I'm currently building 4 tapped horns similar to the DTS20, and I plan to rent or do the mobile DJ thing once I get a good enough soundsystem.

EDIT: What size room will you be using these in? Bigger rooms need more cabs, and if you are planning to use these outside, you will need lots more cabs....

EDIT2: If those DTS20's don't have enough bass for you, ask Danley to build you a matterhorn: ;)

Late reply..but thankyou everyone for their input - it has helped a lot! :)

MikeHunt - Sounds as though a 'tower' is the thing to aim for as you mention something being a 'nice top' and whatever?

The budget is not going to be huge and i am even contemplating trading in my B&W 685s to gain a bit more of a budget to play with.

Do people recommend passive or active speakers by the way?

The room size will not be too big at all and when they will be taken outside, it won't be a huge area. :)

I'll research into those brands as well.

SRM450s may be a tiny bit out of my price range unless i go second hand? Would that be a wise thing to do?

Will post more tomorrow morning as i need to be up early..oh and don't worry about hijacking TDK. :p

Going to a shop today and here are the speakers within budget that they sell...

Electro Voice SX100
Alesis PROVENUE 1501
Mackie C300
Mackie SRM350
Mackie SRM450
Samson Live 612 Speakers
Kam IMS12 Active PA Speaker
Kam IMS15 Active PA Speaker

Also like the look of...

Cerwin Vega INT252 (Passive)
Work WPL inA (Active)

Mackie SRM450

Then at a later date you can buy a 2nd hand SWA1501

You're not going to do want you want to do without spending money but the Mackie SRM450 will offer the best bang for the buck at the moment.
Active is the way to go and in a few years we might not see normal passive speakers.
Big bass requires big bass cabs : 2x18s > 1x18 > 1x15 but if you're playing an average pub room then one SWA1501 at a later date will make you go 'wow'.
If you said you were gigging at a big club and wanted to spend £500 I wouldn't even bother replying.
Your reference to a tower is probably what us old guys call a 'stack' of speakers like the speakers in my photo.

Haha - based on what information? People rack amps up in a room out the way where they can be kept cool, it keeps the things seperate so if somebody beers a cab they aren't taking an amp with them, and it keeps weight down. Not to mention a lot of the time you won't need an amp channel per speaker. It makes no sense to bring the two back together unless you need a highly portable system.

The tower thing (DTS20) is a sub which will take care of everything below 100Hz. The top I link (SH50) does the mid and treble, 100Hz and above basically.

The Danley stuff is pretty pricey but the output and distortion figures are very impressive IMO.

I see you've gone with Mackie's tho, not a bad choice. Thier stuff is known to be pretty robust, even tho I don't own any Mackie stuff myself... How do they sound?

They did sound amazing..i was open with the guy and said i did know more about HiFis and whatever..asked quite a few questions right the way down to the basics and he was very helpful. :)

I couldn't stay for long but i was very impressed..got confused by the price as he said the v2 Mackie 450s were £500 for a pair but on the website it is over £1k, not surprised..but i SWEAR he said pair and i even commented on the price after..but ho hum.

Keeping my options open - including the possibility of selling my B&W 685s and downscaling for use with TV/Gaming and i won't be purchasing until August. :)

Edit: Oh and he spoke about the 'tower' thing as well and adding a sub if i wanted to..as for the Danley, anywhere in Central have them where i can see what they sound like? Is WestEndDj a competitor?

Haha - based on what information?

I suppose you're right, it just seems that a lot of shops seem to be going that way.
You'll never see Actives at a proper big concert.
Ooh, thats another assumption I've just made.

Anyway, just got back from trying my new 2,900 watt Mackie system and it sounds awesome.
I can't wait for the gigs this weekend.

I thought that they would have a dealer in London, but I've just looked on their website ( http://www.danleysoundlabs.com/wheretobuy2007.html ) and it seems they only have dealers in the US. :( They are a pretty new company tho, so I hope they get a UK dealer eventually.

I'd also like to hear the DTS20 sub (aka the tower of power :D), it's had some really good reviews. The only thing is, I think it may be a bit out of your budget anyway as the DTS20 sub is around $3000 I think, as it's state of the art right now...

For subs, horns are better then normal reflex boxes, but they aren't cheap. If you can afford a horn tho, go for that, if not, dual 18" reflex should do. ;) I hope you have a detached house! FWIW, I ended up building my own horn enclosure in the end, so if you are handy with a saw, you may fancy having a go at a bit of DIY audio...

Not so good with DIY. :(

As for Danley, i did take a quick look and tried using key words in Google but couldn't find anything...shame really but perhaps they are a shade out of my price range anyways. :p

Okay, well at this present moment, after what i heard, i don't think a sub will even be needed..i have yet to inform my future housemates i MAY have a 800W speaker system and the house isn't detached but in a line of houses! :o

Tehee, a friend has a 500w PA system and for house parties only needs to hook up one speaker and have it just near a quarter volume, and it's still deafeningly awesome:cool:

If you are in a line of houses you may be better without a sub really... Anything below 60Hz or 70Hz is what really travels thru walls and houses so the fact that the Mackies start dropping off below 50Hz means you can probably have them louder without annoying too many people... In theory at least. ;)

I can't really afford the Danley stuff either at the moment, but it like an Audi R8, it doesn't stop me wanting it. :( If you want more info, try googling "danley dts20" or "danley matterhorn".

 Still undecided about my B&Ws though...if i trade them in and drop down to cheaper bookshelfs, i could raise some cash to afford both the speakers and hopefully with a job over the summer try and get myself a LCD i really want..spend spend spend! :o

Purchase WILL be in August though.

Thanks Mike. :)

We tried the new Mackie PA tonight and we sent some of our fans away because we were way too loud.
I wish people had said something instead of leaving.
We're in Macclesfield tomorrow so I'll have to fine tune the system and make sure I bring the Masters down a couple of notches.

You sure it was the volume that sent them packing? :D

The thing is we have a fantastic following who turn up and fill venues every week so if we upset them then theres something wrong.
Tonight I fine tuned and the sound was superb - nice tight bass end and bright highs.
I'm really chuffed with my purchase.
