I'm trying to install a TRUE on my E8200 & IP35-Pro but I can't get off the backplate that came with the board, is it stuck on my a thermalpad or something coz I can't see how it'd be attached otherwise

If it is a thermal pad get a hair dryer and warm it up for a few mins, should loosen the glue and it should pull off easy enough.

Not sure about easy but it came off, the backplate itself was ridiculously hot by the time it did and my fingers are a little burnt but oh well :)

Ok next problem. I've used the HD from my old system (see sig) and I'd intended just to wipe the C: partition which was the Windows partition previously and reinstall it by booting from the Windows CD so I've gone into the BIOS, changed the boot priority to the CD drive but it's not having it, it keeps loading into Windows then BSODing (which I can understand!). Has anyone ever come across this before?

you have to set the boot drive to the actual dvd drive name
scroll down to bottem in the boot order:D

Can you f12 to the boot menu?

That way you should be able to select to boot off the CD. Also, remember to react to the 'press any button' prompt or it will then try to boot off another device (usb, hdd, etc).

gt

The HD isn't in the boot list, it is definitely disabled. I tried the F12 trick GT but it gets me nowhere, from what I can tell, the green light from the CD-Rom drive does go green & then I get the "press any key to boot from CD" message but it doesn't react to my keystrokes for some reason and I end up with the Windows safemode prompt screen, weird that my keyboard works one minute & then not the next?

It's to do with the keyboard options in the bios IIRC.

It is called something like legacy keyboard? Makes your usb keyboard work in the BIOS before the OS boots so it recognises your keystroke to boot from CD.

Yeah..other than that you can get a ps2-usb adaptor for your keyboard.

I have one and have had to use it when I've installed windows - or whenever windows hasn't recognised the usb keyboard.

Yes, USB keyboards work in BIOS, but it seems as soon as a low level Macroshaft system kicks in, they vanish again....witness the hard drive that chckdsk mangled for my brother because he couldn't "press any key to abort".

Also, by the by, remember to knock your OC'ing off when installing, it's not the time for the system to burp, and sometimes the installer just chokes on an OC'd system as a matter of principle.

I bought a USB to PS2 adapter to see if that sorted the problem and it hasn't, I just can't understand why the bloody thing works one minute and not the next, I really don't know what to do short of buying a new HDD which I really don't want to do :(

depends what type of keyboard that you have e.g. an PS/2>USB adapter doesn't provide enough power for a Saitek Eclipse.

In the BIOS you want to set USB by BIOS rather thna USB by OS.

is your old HD IDE or SATA?

It's just some old school no frills Packard Bell keyboard so I wouldn't have thought power would be an issue? Anyway, I found the above option in the BIOS and set it to BIOS and this has got me as far as installing the OS but now even I change the option to back OS, I've got no keyboard in Windows! It's just bonkers, can't get my head around it. My HD is SATA if that helps.

was it working OK in Windows until you installed the Intel chipset drivers (there is a known problem for some people with Windows/USB/Intel chipset drivers, MS have a knowledgebase article about it)?

& just leave the USB support on by BIOS.

I don't know to be honest Buff, I guess I did install the chipset drivers pretty much as soon as I could get into Windows so maybe the issue mentioned above it what's happening. That said, I did by a USB to PS2 adapter so wouldn't that rule the problem out?

Not sure what the problem was as I decided to reformat in the end and all seems ok now, I'm gonna run blend overnight to test for stability & then I'm going to get clocking :D Thanks to everyone that helped me with this anyway, especially BUFF!
