2008 Spanish GP - Race 4/18

I'm going to miss this race :(. on the booze in Plymouth for a mates birthday.

As for force insia, I have the feeling it's going to be the Abramovich of the F1 world. where they will just chuck money at it as there billionaires. Expect good things from them. The Motor home is just a show of there investment. Until they can really get designing and improving there cars.

Where you going? Personally, after 4 years here, Id rather watch the GP...

Why? Do you know something I dont as to why this wont be a Ferrari demonstration of superiority?

Then again, the qualifying looks to be more exciting than the race will be...
Well yes Ferrari will be strong, very strong but the rest is unknown :)

Then you must be anti social.
Plymouths great.

Probably cuba/north hill.

ps when's it repeated? or can you download the video from itv now they're doing internet feeds?

Well, no, being a 4th year and from the country I feel sunday afternoon drinking should be in a beer garden in the middle of nowhere with all your mates chilling out and relaxing. In plymouth, the nearest thing to a beer garden is a patio next to a main road (Air) and by 3pm your surrounded by hammered 1st and 2nd years which makes you wish you werent a 4th year...

Ferrar 1,2. The rest in a long line for however many laps, maybe a spin due to no traction controll, and 2 cars will breakdown... there you go, race report.

Have you never been to the waterfront then. It's got a lovely beer garden 2 foot from the sea and generally no students.

I'm drinking sat night, Just wont be back home in time to watch it.

Difference with RBR is most of the outlay has been on Facilities and Staff. There are still more improvements looming.

Oh joy. Catalunya. I think I'm right in saying that there has only been one decent race here, ever - the first one, in 1991, with Senna and Mansell going wheel-to-wheel on the main straight and Schumacher making an early demonstration of what he would turn out to be capable of. Hell, this is the place that managed to see only one real overtaking move in the '99 race. Irvine said after that event "I was so bored I wish I had brought my radio with me!" Could they not say "sod it", make the Valencia round the Spanish GP and give this date to another track?

Please?

/waits for Memphis et al to chime in asking why I still watch F1....

Mind, I shouldn't gripe too much. They are at least poised to bring slick tyres back next year. Finally, a step in the right direction. It's about a decade too late - they should have snuffed out that thought about grooved tyres right at the beginning - but it is a good move. They're making brave noises about 40% reductions in downforce as well - if they end up with as much as that I'd be very surprised. Most people I talk to seem to reckon that it'll be about 25-30% by the time the engineers and designers are done clawing back what they can.

Maybe you should look for a racing series where you can preview a race and say "Hopefully there will be CARNAGE!!111" in a loud American voice JRS. ;)

Slicks with reduced downforce = **** all difference.

Thanks for your expert opinion :p

I actually think the 2009 regs will improve things. Most people (including the drivers) just assume that for next year there will only be a general decrease in downforce - which will then work towards changing the general grip balance - (decreased aero grip and more mechanical grip).

But the whole point of the new regs is not to just decrease the amount of downforce. All the OWG tunnel work was based on cars following each other. The design iterations focussed on reducing the load delta and more importantly the balance shift of the car when following another one.

If I want carnage I'll watch the Touring Cars on a wet day. As I recall, that was your main objection to NASCAR - oddly enough, they advertise Touring Cars on the basis that "there will be CARNAGE!!111". Compared with that, NASCAR is a shining example of great driving.

My comments about carnage for the Vegas race were brought on by last season, where Goodyear brought a very hard compound tyre. That, coupled with the new surface at Vegas meant that virtually everyone hit the wall at least once - it was like Darlington, only at Darlington they scrape the walls on purpose.

As far as crashes and good racing go, I think I explained my position best in this post.

Aaaaaaaaanyway, back on topic. ITV have got Brundle driving six GP cars from six decades to mark the 60th anniversary of GP racing at Silverstone. First up is the Maserati 250F - they're showing the segment on race day I think. He's driving a different car every race weekend leading up to the British GP.

Im really glad that the wait it over, the last 3 weeks has been way too long.

Going to miss qualifying though due to the Man Utd match.

Ive watched the practice highlights on ITV, Kimi dominating both friday sessions. Hes the one to beat.

Im not sure if hes going to be light though and go for pole. Kubica could be a threat.

A subtle but important point there - the aero changes look to have reduced the amount of disturbance caused by the first car which should mean the following car should still get some aero benefits - enough to ensure they are not unduly penalised for attempting to overtake...

The 2009 rule changes for me actually may bear some fruit...

ps3ud0

I agree with what Coulthard said with regards to the regs next year. They should take out refuelling and just have the cars being able to run on the one tank for the whole race, as it is true that qualifying/race is dictated by the fuel loads and *** only overtaking that takes place is in the pitlane.

At least if they had to run with the one tank of fuel then they would have to make more economical cars to be able to finish the race, which imo could make there more overtaking as *** fastest cars might not be the most economical and therefore would have to carry more fuel, so making them heavier.

With regards to qualifying today, i think that the Ferraris will be out in front with the next 10 places being separated by not very much.

It wasn't an objection it was an observation that everyone previewing the NASCAR race didn't seem to be interested in the racing, championship etc, only that there was going to be crashes and carnage. I guess the BTCC are trying to appeal to that kind of fan too.
