Do VM have some funky system in place to discourage use of torrent clients?

Reason I ask is that I have issues where my connection seems to connect for a few seconds, stop for a few seconds and repeat that on and on which makes life somewhat annoying.

All goes back to normal as soon as I close the torrent client.

Any ideas?
 
That's weird, usually throttling would just limit the torrent.

It could be that your router can't handle all the connections (torrents can use hundreds of connections at times).

Try lowering the maximum connection amount?
 
Global max was set at 200, have reduced it to 10 just to see what happens, no idea what a reasonable number is.

Also, have tried two routers and both exhibited the same thing.

that's a strange problem, have you tried changing ports that your bittorrent client uses?

that would probably fix the problem if it was Virgin Media trying to stop you using Bittorrent

EDIT: a reasonable amount of connections is 200, anything above and it gets problematic.
 
always had problems with BT on virgin for as long as i can remember. 2 modems and 3 different routers, same problems. you have to limit the number connections and upload speed right down otherwise it will just keep dropping the connection.
 
All is fine in Bristol with VM, i have no problems at all with my torrents.

200 global connections and encryption enabled. port forwarding setup properly in the router and such.

are you using UPNP?
 
Yup, dropping the maximum connections appears to have resolved the issue, not too worried about speed to be honest, I just want a consistant connection.

A reasonable number is 200, but if you router is a bit crap then it won't handle it.

The problem with only 10 connections if you'll never get good download speed as not everyone in the peer list uploads.

If you find it's not dropping anymore when using 10 connections, try up it to 100, if that's still fine try 150.
 
Weill it's been on 50 for a few minutes with no issues now, will up it again in a few until I can make it drop out.

My router is crap, it was under £20... the old one was a Linksys one but it was quite old so it's likely that was the cause there too.
 
No isssues here, bypass your router and see if its ok then.

I use Bit Tornado (Basic looking and based on original Bit Torrent Client) as other Clients seem to be more like Kazaa now with Multiple Windows and Graphs etc.

It does everything I need, inc limit DL or UL to avoid STM.

The only thing I change from default is the Ports and I do not let the Upload run as Auto as thay will take all my Upstream and kill my Downstream.

I have found setting it to FAST CABLE (20KB-100KB) by Default in Prefs and putting Slider at 55KB each time I start a Torrent will get me my full 20meg Download (if enough Seeds/Peers).

when Im done I simply slide it to 100KB and upload at my full 96KB.

You must make sure your Connectable in your Firewall (hardware and/or software) and have a Green light on the Client.

200 is reasonable? Ive been using uTorrent with 800 max connections, max 250 per torrent (normaly i dont go above 400 connectoins) and my old netgear router has no trouble with it.
 
I have Unlimted Peers (thats default), never had an issue and have seen on rare occassions 1000's of Seeds/Peers.

I should have mentioned that it is all good from firewall point of view.
 
Finally got around to getting into the mess of cables and plugged the desktop directly into the cable modem and as such I can now confirm that it is not my router, direct to the modem I get kicked off the net completely when torrents are running.

Today I was attempting downloading the AOC client and had it set to a maximum of 5 peers and I was still kicked off.

I wonder if the NTL120 modem I have is faulty or dying.
 
i had a ntl120 with the same problem, got it replaced, still not 100% about torrents atm. i need some serious help with them.
the VM replacement of modems is a good quality. 2 days, free cost, easy
