For the ultimate watch snob

An expensive gold ring with a diamond on its circumference doesn't serve any useful practical purpose but the majority of the women in the UK will be presented one at some point in their lives. Its just jewelry, everyone knows the bottom of the range £5 casio watch can tell the time but most people who buy an expensive watch do so because they believe it looks good. This is just taking it to the extremes a bit.

Yet someone else who has failed to actually read the thread.

"He added that anyone can buy a watch that tells time — only a truly discerning customer can buy one that doesn’t."

I wonder what definition of discerning he's using :p

what makes you assume that?

As for the original point ref why would anyone wear something simply for the way it looks - do you walk round in a boiler suit and never buy anything based upon aesthetics? - This expensive watches are primarily pieces of jewelry - you only need to spend £5 for a device that simply tells the time the rest of the price is down to the materials, engineering, looks, brand etc... this particular 'watch' is simply taking that to an extreem.

Because if you'd read the entire thread you'd see why I said that, and probably work out the amount of sarcasm I was employing at the time.

For the hard of thinking...

I know full well that a watch is not merely a device for telling the time. If it was no-one would buy anything but the cheapest one. Sort of like an ADSL microfilter, you need one, it performs a function, but no-one is going to pay £1k for a diamond-studded one.

A watch IS a piece of jewelery, and therefore it doesn't have to tell the time in order to be expensive or desirable. A £30k watch doesn't perform its function any better than a £50 one. It doesn't silver-plate the seconds and deliver them to you on a bed of virgins.

Spending $300k on something like that is just the same as spending it on a bracelet. Just because it looks like a watch is neither here nor there.

Is that better? Perhaps I should leave sarcasm out of my future posts, it only seems to cause people confusion.

:)

I wear a watch for a few reasons:

- it's faster than getting a phone from your pocket, and I often don't have my phone with me anyway such as if I've gone to the gym etc.
- when I'm swimming or diving I need a watch to tell the time / dive time
- whoever said they find a PC with the internet - that's is a stupid comment for obvious reasons (unless you never see daylight)

This sort of proves to me that people that spend thousands on expensive watches only do so as a status symbol, and in the end its just expensive bling and not a usefull device.

Great argument. Find a novelty watch and then throw 99.9% of other expensive watches in the same category

Yes, of course a large part of buying an expensive watch is for the status. So what? I take it you also don't understand the point of cars that cost over 10,000 quid then? Or even jewelery - that serves no practical purpose other than to look good....why not make it from Coke cans, eh? And art...pffft, don't even get me started...

And, no, I don't have an expensive watch. But I would if I could afford one.

Perhaps - unfortunately not everyone has a crystal ball at home and I wasn't the only one who took your post at face value.

But this watch equated to a motor vehicle would be £2million Supercar that only had reverse gears.

I'm sure it is possible to buy plenty of jewellery pieces for the same amount or more.

This one just happens to look like a watch.
