8800gtx cooler

I believe it requires the removal and refitting of about 8 small screws. It's not worth it though, the stock cooler is actually pretty good.

It's very easy to fit, the only slightly hard part is you may need to heat up the card to remove the old heatsink.

Load temps with the stock cooler were around 82c and now they're around 54c. Well worth it, plus it's quieter :)

Considering my load temp is now almost 40 degrees cooler (600/200), I can't see why it's not worth it? Do you actually own one?

I bought one when they first came out and fitted it. I couldn't get any additional overclock and as it's no longer thermally controlled the fans run full-on all the time. I have three 8800GTXs (two are water-cooled in SLi) and the air-cooled one is silent except for when the PC first boots up, when it's very noisy indeed.

Dropping your load temperatures by 40C is irelevant if the card doesn't perform any better. It's a graphics card, it runs hot (often 75-100C) and there's no problem with that. By removing the original HSF you invalidate the warranty, and I don't see any point if you're not getting any additional performance from the card.

My card is eVGA so my warranty is still valid, besides people just fit the stock cooler back and there's no way for them to tell.

I can run it at 625/2100, with temp relatively low, from the stock speed 575/1800 and with my stock cooler I had artifacts immediately after an hour or so of intense gaming. So clearly there's massive improvement and "additional clocks" there!

A better card than mine can get to the above mentioned overclocked speed just with stock cooling but at the price of approaching 100 degrees and will die a lot quicker than my card. Have you noticed how many BFG OCs have died recently just by looking at the posts in GFX?

It's called a "cooler", it does what it's supposed to, keeping the card cool. Why you think 40 degrees cooler is irrelevant is still beyond me. Heat kills graphics card quicker than anything else, you can achieve higher clocks with your card running at 100 or below 50 it's entirely up to you but I choose the latter.
We have a completely different expectation and perspective in regard to "cooler" but I still stand by my point, it's totally worth the money.

EVGA website said:

I can run maxxed out at 630/2100 all day with the stock cooler. Perhaps yours wasn't making good contact with the core?

People have been doing silly things with graphics cards. That's not the stock cooler's fault.

If the card is running within it's tolerances then it's just fine. Low temperatures are great for bragging rights, but that's about all.

And I disagree with you fundamentally.

From eVGA website:
"There is no physical damage to the PCB, GPU/chipset, or components that are caused by: Damage due to improper installation, damage during modification of any kind, damage during any type of Aftermarket cooling installation, and water damage of any kind."

If you crack the core, break the card in half when replacing the cooler then obviously you're out of luck. They do cover aftermarket cooler as long as the hardware installation itself doesn't break/damage the card.

And "I disagree with you fundamentally", low temperatures are not for bragging rights, I can't run the speed I'm running now without the AC 8800GTX fitted.

I have said all my points and see no need for this to be continued, enough have been said.

well ican clock my gtx to just 620/1480/1900 and get no artifacts but as soon as i start to play games after 10 mins it freezes,so was thinking of getting one just for temp wise but if not going to get anymore speed out of it might just stick with what ive got cheers to all,,p.s it is 52 at idle and goes up into the 80s at full load so put the clocks back to standard and runs fine

Is this with the fan @ 100%?.

the fan profile that is set on these things by default is terrible, I used rivatuner to change it and now my temps are 20 degrees cooler under load, using a stock cooler. :)

I think my lowest temp with fans on 100% was 54 degrees.
