Peasants, by Marxist painter, Diego Rivera

Diego Rivera was a Mexican painter and muralist born in Guanajuato City, Guanajuato. Studied painting in Mexico before going to Europe in 1907.
While in Europe he took up cubism and had exhibitions in Paris and Madrid in 1913; he then had a show in New York City in 1916. In 1921 he returned to Mexico, where he undertook government-sponsored murals that reflected his communist politics in historical contexts.

He married Frida Kahlo in 1929, and their tempestuous marriage got to be as famous as their art. In the 1930s and '40s Rivera worked in the United States and Mexico, and many of his paintings drew controversy. His 1933 mural for the RCA Building at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan featured a portrait of Communist Party leader Lenin, the resulting uproar led to his dismissal and to the mural's official destruction in 1934.
Similarly, a 1948 mural for the Hotel de Prado in Mexico that included the words "God does not exist" was covered and held from public view for nine years.

His personal life was as dramatic as his artwork. In 1929, he married Kahlo who was roughly 20 years younger. The two had a passionate, but stormy relationship, divorcing once in 1939 only to remarry later. She died in 1954. He then married Emma Hurtado, his art dealer. Rivera died of heart failure on November 24, 1957, in Mexico City, Mexico.

Rivera's talent for historical murals and his tributes to earthy folk traditions made him one of the most influential artists in the Americas and one of Mexico's most beloved painters.

I'm not religious but when I saw this in Glasgow years ago I was utterly stunned, it's simply amazing. I wasn't seeing it from a religious point of view though which confused my parents, I just though it was utterly beautiful and a bit sad.

not a massive art fan but quite like escher tbh...

Mad thing is my grandfather was going to buy an original escher a few decades ago but my nana thought it was a tad pricey at the time - can't remember how much she said but he'd have made a huge profit if he had.

Favourite work of art is a very subjective. There are quite a few Renaissance artists that I absolutely adore, and then again I'm also a big fan of Canaletto's work.

That said tough, my all time favourite piece of art isn't a painting at all but a building, the Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral)! Half a millennia in construction, and it still isn't fully completed.

That is easily the most stupid thing I hae ever read.

Opinions? Subjective? Never!
I've read sillier....

On mobile phones:

- Annoying having to charge it, even if I have to do it only once a week
- With a mobile there is no 'escape from it all'
- Annoying having something on your person at all times
-Annoying have to think to turn it off/put it on silent when entering libraires, cinemas etc
-Annoying being contacted pointlessly by your mates and other people, which you have to respond to with a mundane and time wasting text
-It is frankly a cost for which does not bring much pleasure to me
-I hate the culture of them and their effect on society - it has been proven how contingent they make social arrangement; that is, everything is always subject to change, things get cancelled more often because cancelling is only a phone call away
- They are uncomfortable to use if you have a lengty conversation, due to their heat
-Seeing them sitting around the house is literally on your desk is uncessary clutter

Good thread :)
