So guys basically I thought I would download the Fakefactory Mod for HL2 and I have encountered problems when using it :( Unfortunately I can only get through the first instance of the intro just until Barney lets you out of the "interogation" chamber and then when it gets to the loading screen just after it......crash! :( Now I see there is a problem or unsupported thing for 32bit which is what I am trying to use so does anyone have a work around for this at all? I am trying to play it on Vista so is there greater success on XP?
If you have any advise/settings it would be great :)

Needs 4 gig of ram I believe. Only solution is to go for a 64 bit OS.

Quote from the readme:

"32 BIT WARNING:
--------------------------------------------------

This mod was developed and tested on 64 Bit Windows. It is NOT supported on 32 Bit Windows, because of the limited Userspace with 32 Bit systems. You can try it on 32 Bit, but prepare for crashes.

On some 32 Bit systems it is possible to overcome this limitation with some boot.ini switches for raising the userspace limit. I'm not going into detail here, because those tweaks are dangerous and should only be
done by people, who are knowing exactly what they do.

ADDENTUM FOR VERSION 7:

V7 of this mod uses much more Hires textures than the previous versions. This means: The engine has to cache a peak-value of >2GB texturedata at runtime. It's almost impossible to play this mod crash-free on 32 Bit systems without lowering the graphics settings."

Interestingly enough I have 4gb installed.....well technically its something like 3.32 or something so I do have enough there. Some people seem to have it work on 32bit windows but Im trying to find a work around! I think il try manually loading the next area and see if that helps! Damn it looks good though and makes me wanna play through the game with the new models! Will be gutted if I cant get this working properly! :(

I have 4GB (well 3.5GB seen) on WinXP. Worked fine for me. Even when you get really up close to the characters...

we've all done it.

Did you enable the switch to allow programs to address more than 2GB of ram?

What switch is that and can you explain? cheers!

Also skipped the one loading screen I had problems with and it runs perfectly ;) :P I guess if a crash occurs during loading you just have to skip that process!

I had an issue in 32bit where I couldn't get past the red letter day loading screen, it'd crash to desktop.

Since installing Vista64, I've had no problems running it at all, even with only 2GB ram.

not too sure why, but the FF mod just really doesn't like 32bit :/

i'm quite sure that microsoft disabled that switch with the release of windows XP because if causes a whole host of problems, not least that most programs need to be programed to be aware of the higher memory registers.

Ah, found it:

I should add a note about the /3GB, /4GT and /PAE Windows boot.ini switches, too, because they often come up when people are talking about 4Gb-plus Windows PCs.

They are all useless to you. You do not want them.

/3GB and /4GT are config settings for different versions of Windows that tell the operating system to change the partitioning of the 4Gb 32-bit address space so that applications can use 3Gb and the OS kernel only 1Gb, as opposed to the standard 2Gb-each arrangement. They don't help at all with the 3Gb barrier, and most applications don't even notice them, so desktop users lose kernel memory space (and system performance) for no actual gain at all.

The /PAE boot.ini switch, on NT-descended Windows flavours, activates the Physical Address Extension mode that's existed in every PC CPU since the Pentium Pro. That mode cranks the address space up to 64 gigabytes (two to the power of 36), and the computer can then give a 4Gb addressing block within that space - or even more, with extra tricks - to each of several applications.

PAE's no good to the everyday 3Gb-problem-afflicted user, though, for two reasons.

First, it presents 64-bit addresses to drivers, and thus causes exactly the same compatibility problems as a proper 64-bit operating system, except worse, because now you need PAE-aware drivers for 32-bit Windows, instead of just plain 64-bit drivers for a 64-bit OS. From a normal user's point of view, PAE gives you the incompatibility of a 64-bit operating system when you're still running a 32-bit OS.

For this reason, Microsoft changed the behaviour of the /PAE option in almost all versions of WinXP as of Service Pack 2. They fixed the endless driver problems by, essentially, making /PAE in XP not do anything. All versions of WinXP except for the x64 Edition now have a hard 4Gb addressing limit, no matter what hardware you use them on and what configuration you choose.

This isn't a big problem, of course, since XP is not meant to be a server operating system. But it's still mystifying to people who try the /PAE flag and can't figure out why it doesn't work.

Oh, and just in case you for some reason still wanted to try PAE: It eats CPU time, too.

I'm pretty sure they haven't as I've seen it used on XP. I'm by no means an expert though.

Though as I have said the fix for any problems on 32-bit OS is basically to skip the loading screen and load the next map independantly throught he console!

map d1_trainstation_02 for example, seems to work a treat! However it is only two loading screens so far into the game i have failed. The very first leaving the room with barney as a combine trooper! And then Kleiners lab after Alyx saves ya from the Combine! After which I am now onto around the fourth checkpoint witht he hovercraft and its fine! Loving the HDR and the Character models though, its a nice mod! Things just look a lot better imo!

now with quote! :D

by no means am i saying you're wrong, but i'm just saying that this is what i've read

lol /re quote :)

That's not the switch I meant actually - I think by default the system reserves ~2 gigs for OS addressing and 2gigs for applications but there's a way you can skew this to be 1.5 and 2.5 or 1 and 3..ish.

if you care to read the quote again you'll see that it details three different switches...
