All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Wages are irrelevant to to my point.
I don't think they are. If Newcastle really were his 'first choice' as so many toon fans seem to claim, then why would he join Spurs for what seem very average wages, especially in todays market..?

Also with the Euro Champs coming up, he knows a good tourney for him would have put him in a very strong position. Yet he signed for us straight away, which says to me he wanted to join us?
As for the final price, who knows what goes on behind the scenes.
Well you seemed to know enough to claim you wouldn't pay... now you claim we don't know what goes on behind the scenes? Make your mind up mate ;)

First of all, if Zagreb didn't accept Newcastle's bid then we wouldn't have a chance to discuss personal terms with Modric, that's why wages are irrelevant.

As for the price, no, I don't know what the price was but I heard that whatever it was Newcastle were unwilling to match it.

Anyway, it's probably all conjecture, that's just what I've heard though.

Unfortunately, the Independent are the ones publishing the rumour, and they're not usually complete guessers like the tabloids :(.

final Newcastle one for the day

Magpies scout Sakho

Paris Saint Germain defender Mamadou Sakho has been scouted by Newcastle United as The Magpies compile a lengthy list of potential summer targets.

The Paris-born youngster captained PSG at the tender age of 17, a French record, and has also skippered France Under-17s.

Respected sources claim Newcastle posted representatives at the Coupe de la Ligue final, when Sakho impressed as his side overcame Lens in a dramatic match in front of Setanta Sports cameras, and a return trip to Paris is on the cards.

Directors Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez have handed manager Kevin Keegan a short-list of targets and the United boss will be clocking up the air miles to see them personally.

"As far as their list goes, we'll be flying off over the next three or four weeks to look at the players we don't know," admitted Keegan recently.

"We know their names but there are one or two on the list from Dennis that I haven't seen play."

The 18-year-old is rumoured to be interested in moving to England, although PSG are likely to resist any approaches for their promising stopper.

Albeit it only being a rumour I find it strange if Man U take a gamble on Santa Cruz after only one season in the Prem, it is possible he's overachieved this year it's not like he's been consistent every season when playing for Bayern.

He's gonna cost sub 10m too.

It's an interesting story for sure. I can see why someone would report on this (i.e. make it up) as he's a physical kind of player who offers something different than what we have at the moment. If we were to go for another South American but more of an out and out striker, its Diego Milito for me as I agree Santa Cruz isn't a prolific striker

Santa Cruz would be a better option than Saha, he wouldn't be in the first 11 though on a regular basis. I really don't think Fergie will gamble on buying an expensive young striker from abroad as he'd be expected to contribute straight away rather than giving him time to settle in. Fully expect a premiership striker to be signed if we sign one. Which probably leaves only Berbatov, Santa Cruz, Jones and Owen as any sort of realistic options. Only Berbatov would please me really.

Sky Sports Reporting interest in Roque Santa Cruz from Man Utd

That rumours been going since christmas, same with McCarthy and Chelsea last season. Look how that turned out . 10 mil + though and you can have him, I trust Hughes to get us someone even better when he has money!

Oh god you're joking?

It's not been confirmed by anybody official yet, but if he's going anywhere it's Milan. We'll all know after tomorrow anyway as that's his deadline with Arsenal, who knows what could happen because he was supposed to have gone to Milan at the weekend and that doesn't *seem* to have happened so he might have been trying to get a few more thousands out of Arsenal. I still believe he's leaving although nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong!

I don't think Hleb will leave personally, and if Flamini stays, Hleb definitely will.

Agree with all of that. My only concern with Berbatov, is that he seems to go missing when things aren't going his way. Which Jones do you refer to, Kenwyn ?

Don't mind how much he goes for, just don't want him no more, he seems more championship quality
Newcastle Tracking 'The New Drogba'

A number of teams tracking highly-rated Bafetimbi Gomis of St Etienne - and Kevin Keegan's Newcastle have been identified as one of them.

Gomis was looking to leave Les Verts last summer, but was eventually persuaded to stay with the French Ligue 1 club.

And this season he has impressed again, scoring 14 goals in 31 appearances.

Now the 22-year-old is keen to secure a move to a bigger club, and that has alerted a clutch of leading European teams. Scouts are regularly to be seen at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard monitoring the progress of the "new Drogba."The Magpies are thought to be willing to open the bidding at 18million euros (£14million).
