Hey,

I lost my NI card ages ago around the house or in an old wallet or something and i need another one for a new job.

So anyone know how i go about getting one ?

Wow Google really does work...

What do I do if I have lost my National Insurance number card?
Report it to your nearest DWP office, Social Security office in Northern Ireland or HM Revenue & Customs office. If you want a replacement card you will need to complete an application form. Remember that you are only allowed one replacement.

They asked for the card?

I put mine in my wallet the day I got it, sat down and it snapped (buns of steel) so I threw it away and haven't needed it since.

LOL this whole NI card thing is a joke, no? Whatever happened to electronic data? What's the point of carrying around a little piece of plastic with your NI number?

As long as you can remember your number it really shouldn't matter whether you have the card or not. If you really don't have a single payslip / P60 / student loans website with the number on it, then you could phone a previous employer and see if they have it.

If you get a replacement card then they seem to have a strange "only one replacement ever" policy which means you'll want to look after it next time!

I just don't understand why you need a card in the first place. Back home in Australia, we don't have cards and everyone gets along just fine. Why introduce another layer of bureaucracy when it's so obviously redundant?

In our place atleast they use that combined with photo ID to prove you have the right to work in the uk otherwise it could be a big fine.

I lost my card years ago, but I know my number by heart.

Mine was in my Simpsons wallet (damn I wish I was still that cool) which I lost/had stolen about 10 years ago. Somehow I remembered my number. I think.

Either that or I'm paying NI to the wrong number (is that even possible?)!

I never received one when I turned 16. Never had one sent to me, ever. I ended up walking to the local job centre and asked them what it was.

We still don't know why you need the card?

What is wrong with writing down the number and photocopying it a few times?

One job I had insisted that they needed to see your NI card before you could start work. Can't remember if it was proof of identity or eligibility to work or just that you were giving them the right number or something.

That said, what happens if you need it, loose it a second time and can't replace it? I don't think a one replacement policy is exactly a good idea..

mine got cracked. I stuck it back together with stick back plastic(!) but it ended up falling into smaller pieces :p
