Im after a 50'' Plasma not sure what i should be looking for, its for the living room wall mounted and will be used for sky and watching dvd's

I bought the Panasonic PZ70, but id recommend the PX80 or if you want a bargain, the PX70. After buying it i realised the only real 1080p material ill be using for a few years is blu-ray, but since i mainly use DVD i should have saved £300 and got the PX70.

I paid about £1130 for my 1080p PZ70, while the PX70 is about £830 at the mo, not sure on pricing and availability for the new PX80.

Thats a fair question, if moneys no option, then Pioneer Kuros is the best plasma money can buy, i went for the 1080p panny over the 1080i pioneer, id probably go with the pioneer if i had another chance.

oh sorry the budget is £1,000 pref but will go slightly over.

Ah right not a bad budget at all. Don't bother looking at LCD tvs, plasma is the only choice when the majority is sky/freeview etc and films, better balcks, smoother motion, and jsut a much richer and more peachy picture.

42 inch pioneer is still around £1100-1200, but if you have your heart set on a 50 inch then look no further than the panasonics. Also check out the new 46 PZ85 (or was it PZ80, can' rememebr this early in mroning). Haven't seen this tv, but I had its predecessor reserved and ready to be bought as it was soo good, until I saw the Kuro.

A few question though:

1. What is your viewing distance ?
2. How long before you want to buy ?

2, because the new pioneers will be out around june time and might be waiting for to see their pricing and if panasonics may drop a little.

After a fair amount of research we went with the Panasonic 50px70 and was just over £700. We are really chuffed with it but then we don't use blu-ray or anything like that, just freeview.

the distance is around 5 foot max, and looking to purchase in the next week/two

You want to site 5' away from a 50" TV?

I'd try a mock-up first if I were you; I used to sit 5' away from a 42" TV and it was pretty uncomfortable because you couldn't keep everything within your usable field of vision. As a result you had to move your head if something happend near the edge of the screen.

It might be ok for you, but it put me off getting a big TV for a while.

We managed to get a 50"PX70 for free after our 46" Samsung DLP started to fail (darker bar at left hand side of the screen), It's better in almost every way.
Only niggle is that there's only one phono sound input, which is shared between the component and PC inputs - meaning i have to switch the Audio cables round whenever i move between my Wii and my Media PC.

The room and distance is perfect for a 50'' its only just been gutted and all the cables have been buried in the wall ready. Now my parents are the type of people who dont like ordering from online, and possibley would like buying from a local high street shop you know the kind i mean ;)

Go for the kuro 508 then,, but you need to find another 6-700 :(:p

Erm honestly check out the the panasonics and just see which one you can best afford, and get a cetain department store (go shopping to waitrose ;)) to pricematch another store with the cheaper price, plus you will get their 5yr warranty which is priceless.

Spoken like a true Plasma owner :p

I've recently been looking into a new flatpanel. A friend has the Sharp 46" 2LE LCD screen. Its £999, great freeview/sky picture, Blacks are fantastic (equal to his old Panasonic 42" Plasma) True 24P and 100Hz so smooth motion and a vibrant picture.

And 1080p.

Of course ! I did spent 2 long months comparing tvs and eventually found the best. But most importantly all over them looked very different in *** varies shops I tried, so needed a lot of setting up to srot out the picture

I would say go to specsavers, or compare 2 well setup sets side by side, then you will see the truth :)

Vibrant picture does not mean accurate though ;)

I've been looking that long its a joke tbh. I've read just about every post on avforums and still can't decide. However, Plasma's don't have the lead they used to over LCD's

No need for spec savers. My friend who has the 46" Sharp also has a 1080P DLP Projector on a 9' screen, 2 X 50" Panasonic Plasma's and a crappy old 42" Plasma from Noah's ark. We've had the 2 Pana's and the Sharp side by side and they all have things they excel at but overall the Sharp has more Pro's than Con's over the Plasma's.

We used Sky SD/HD, Freeview, DVD, Blueray, Avi's and DivX's plus PC output to see how they handle browsing.

They were configured after hours of tweaking until we both agreed we'd got the best picture.

The truth is LCD can be as good if not better overall than Plasma.

TH-50PZ80
TH-50PZ85

Both have 100hz double scan, high contrast ratio's etc etc but what the 85 has over the 80 is intelligent frame creation.

Not entirely sure what this means and I have been trying to find out what the technology is doing inside the set but needless to say it's worth the extra on the 85.

Sounds corny but when viewing HD material the images are so lifelike (movement, detail, colour) you feel like you could reach out and touch them.

If you decide on either of these then make sure you go see them and decide for yourself, I'm pretty sure as soon as you see them side by side you will go for the 85!
