Ok banner title to get you in but look at the sloppy reporting of the beeb.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7372025.stm

Poland was one of eight countries to join the EU in 2004

I thought 10 joined in 2004. Perhaps an oversight from the beeb better read futher on.

No! Confirmation of sloppy reporting is further on

The research looked at migrants who came from the eight countries that joined the European Union in May 2004 (known as the A8) - Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Been working in the EC since 97 and never heard speak of this A8 did the reporter make this up?

Poor Cyprus and Malta don't count then. ;)

well, judging from personal experience, we used to be a group of about 16 people(back then ages between 17 and 24) that came over the period 1998-2001. We basically met here and used to hang out once in a while(weekends, holidays etc). Now there are only 3 of us left with one thinking about going back too so, yeah, its been quite vivid seeing it this way. The other guys didnt make a fortune but generally managed to create fairly successful small businesses with the money they saved so they sure do not regret making such a move.

I suppose the weaker Pound vs the Euro would also play a role here. In my case, I spend my money mostly here though so I dont get to directly face the diminishing value as someone that sends back to their native country.

At work we always use the term A8 when referring to the eight Eastern European countries that joined the EU in 2004.

I'm not sure why we leave out Malta and Cyprus, although at a guess I would say its because they are Commonwealth countries.

Wikipedia knows what the A8 is.

Not sure about Cyprus and Malta.

Ah, got it - the A8 refers to former Eastern Bloc countries. So the reporter is half right.

And partly because of their relatively small size. After all, leaving aside the fact that they are fairly more developed, how many Maltese(not to be mistaken with the "Maltesers") are to migrate to the UK?
