How did it run out "the other day"?

It either runs out at 23:59 today, or it ran out a month ago.

I think it has to be displayed so no. (might be wrong tho)

Aero

Correct. The offence is failing to DISPLAY a valid tax disc.

You certainly can drive without a tax disc, it won't stop you...

Plod may though! :p tbh, as long as it really is in the Post, and the DVLA's database shows you as up to date, the chances of you being pulled are virtually zero.

Well then it probably runs out tonight, I thought they sent you a reminder for tax?

Well thats what I thought, it's annoying that given all this computerising of the dvla services that so much still has to be done via post.

There shouldn't be any need to display a tax disc at all, it should all be checked on a computer.

Yeah, generally two weeks before it runs out.

Where would the proof be? They'd have to check for every car that passed :/ How would traffic wardens know when it expired? They'd have to check the computer every time they ticketed a car.

Why would traffic wardens need to check? If they were giving you a ticket, it would be logged, and then the computer system should flag that as not having tax.

There's enough cameras with licence plate recognition about these days to record people driving without tax.

I think its silly that if you go into a post office to get a tax disc you need to have both your MOT and Insurance certificate. It's all stored on computers, why can't they just use that database?

The insurance database isn't 100% up to date, there is no "instant" addition of new policies. I've had cars insured for over a fortnight before the DVLA website tax thingy will let me buy a tax disc.

I would be great if it worked "how it should" but the history of government IT projects should make it obvious enough it's never going to happen (in our lifetimes!)

My tax disc failed to turn up in the post and the DVLA had to send another one. (Ordered online) I asked the lady at the DVLA if I could drive my car without actually having the tax disc and she said that I could.

She' said you shown as being registered with the dvla as having car tax so there should be no problem.

she also said which I don't if its true or not that the Offense for not displaying a valid tax disc is only valid if you actually have a tax disc to display...

I still call BS on that one though.

So you should rip the old one off then?
