The fact that 14 years has passed so quickly is worrying, are we getting complacent again? In the last year we've seen drivers walk away from immense impacts - Kubica & Kovaleinen in F1 and Ortelli in sportscars. Not so long ago they would have joined those that are no longer with us:

Alboreto
Senna
Ratzenberger
de Angelis
Bellof
Villeneuve
Peterson
Cevert
Rindt
McLaren
Clark
Rosemeyer

Racing Legends, each and every one.

14 years? blimey, still can't believe it happened in my life time.. was only four. Watched a lot of videos of senna.. true talent.

The crash videos are so sad :(

Senna/Ratz incidents remain the most shocking for me as I saw them as a child and watched formula1 for years. Prior to those two accidents it had been a long time since anyone had died in F1. The worst accident I saw on TV before that must have been the Ricardo Patrese one where is car took off a flipped thru the air.

Tear to the eye here too. Remember I was 15 when it happened, and had just found out my nan died hours earlier.

Would agree with the sentiments that F1's just not been as exciting in subsequent years.

Problem is when you take away the element of danger and risk, you take away much of the attraction to F1, now we see situations in all forms of motor racing where circuits are altered in the interests of safety, pace cars regularly come on, cars are slowed down. Whilst we mourn the death of many racing heroes we also remember a time when motor racing was a genuine thrill to witness, people admired racing drivers for their skill and bravery in what was always a dangerous sport, and accordingly those drivers who knew the risks they faced were richly rewarded. I admire yesterdays heroes even more for those reasons.

R.I.P I remember watching this with my dad, didn't really understand at the time but I remember senna being my favourite :( Unfortunately if it wasn't for these crashes we probably would have had to wait longer for more safety factors to be introduced.

Those 14 years have passed by really quick !!
I remember the whole weekend, starting with the Rubens accident then Saturday and Sunday.

In my opinion Senna is still the greatest driver

I remember the whole weekend, starting with the Rubens accident then Saturday and Sunday.

Plus the start line accident, and then the wheel coming off the Minardi and ploughing into the pit crews.

There was something about that weekend, even watching on TV before the start you could feel there was something very wrong. Almost as if it was inevitable that there would be incidents and tragedy.

Interesting reconstruction there Acidhell2, it all happened so quickly aswell..

I only just realised.. Ayrton Senna was born on the 21st March.. same as me, although obviously a different year :p

14 years already.. unbelievable.. I think the most shocking bits of film there are the guy trying to turn over the burning car because its so obviously tragic because he is so powerless.. But equally the clip of Ratzenbergers crash, when the car finally comes to a rest and you see his head just flopping around loosely in the wreckage.. puts a chill down the spine. The same thing happens in the Senna clip, but its a lot less pronounced..

RIP

RIP all.

Amazing how quickly time has passed.

I second a return from Flibster, always interesting posts / insights into motorsport + other viewpoints.

What have you driven this year?

Plus the start line accident, and then the wheel coming off the Minardi and ploughing into the pit crews.

Yup.

I don't know if Senna is _THE_ greatest ever, Schumacher for me pushes him close. There is no doubt in his absolute genious, how someone can drive so fluent, at such speed is beyond me.
