Hi chaps,

Im after a new car and 306GTi's have caught my eye, anyone owned one of them?

Budget is probably 2.5k tops, is that do-able?

Cheers

Loads of guys have them on there, its the best place for answers.

By the looks of it £2.5k will get you a reasonable one, but your looking at over £3k for a pretty good one, Im keeping my eye on them as I want one myself at soem point.

I bought mine about a year ago now for £3500 took me a while to find one that hadn't been abused. Haven't had any problems with it in the time I have had it, bar the alarm deciding to die.

Drinks a bit if you are happy with your right foot, other than that it's the best handling and most fun car I have owned.

Get one, a china blue one.

Saw one today...the wheels were awesome and it looked a nice car overall...apart from the 4 exahusts on the back bodykit bumper....it didn't even sound that loud?!

I have a 2001 Xsara VTS which is practically the same car with a 5 speed box. Been great in the 9 months I've had it, plenty powerful and surprisingly chuckable given that its around 1200kg. Have a stainless Powerflow cat back exahust fitted which gives a nice burble to the sound.

There is one in the auctions at the moment. The interior is mint apart from the passenger footwell being filled with water and the electric windows not working.

I think they want about £800 for it. Its in a gold metallic colour an doesn't look too bad considering. Its got nice half leather seats too.

Highly strung 2 litre engine that drinks petrol.

Personally I'd get the 2.0HDI, fit an intercooler and do a remap and you'll see 130-140bhp, way more torque and far better fuel economy. The HDI looks the same as the GTI too, same features and bodykit.

But that's just me :)

What a daft suggestion, if he's looking at GTI6s he's looking for something fun to drive, not a diesel to do tens of thousands of miles a year in!

My HDi is plenty fun and it's only 90bhp! You have to remember the HDi shares an almost identical suspension setup (bar a few different bushes and some stiffer components) and therefore is a very fun car to drive.

That'll be the heater matrix! Pig of a job, dash out etc.

Had mine for 3.5 years now and I love it to bits. Never put a foot wrong bar the usual consumables. I must have a good 'un! :p

Edit - I lie, the rear wiper rely went the other month - fixed for £5 thanks to the owners club!

I'm just using mine for commuting 55miles a day now, really should change it but I have complete confidence in the car I find it hard too :o Plus it's damn fun when I go up to the lakes

Any questions just ask, I also find www.306gti6.com a lot more useful than the above site.

Main thing when looking to buy is the cambelt. When was it last done and was the tensioners rollers and water pump done at the same time. It's a weak point of the engine yet Peugeot deny it. Needs changing at 40k to be safe not 72k as suggested. Otherwise it's bye-bye engine.

I considered the GTI-6 as a contender when I bought my current car, but I already had a 306 at the time and I simply couldn't be done with risking having the constant electrical problems I had with my old one.

It basically lost out to the VTI-S on fuel economy, reliability, LSD and running costs. I also preferred the looks of the VTI-S, but the GTI-6 is a very nice looking car. The interiors of both were nothing to write home about so no problem there.

No doubt the GTI-6 is a very nice car, but for me it lost out to the Honda.

Yeah seems a fair few of them have been in the wrong hands.
Any other alternatives chaps?

As people say you are going to get a lot better Xsara VTS for the money. I would look out for a 98 version as the newer bug eye version just looks terrible. I was in the same boat as you. Used to own a 306 xsi which i loved to bits so the next logical step was a GTi-6. Finding one that was minted and standard was hard to come by. I budgeted 3k but had hard luck finding one. I ended up settling for a Nissan Primera GT saloon in the end which i got for half the price. I spent the change on cams, manifold, exhaust and air filter. Dyno'ed 187 at the fly :)
