going to be getting myself a polo in the very near future, 1.4 8v SE probably. is it possible to do this? if so will it give more power? if i use bike carbs will it be MOT legal?

I guess its technically possible but completely pointless. I suggest you just buy one with a good engine in the first place although I admit with the Mk4 Golf this is quite difficult.

Huh? Thread title says Mk4 Golf, but then you post this:

I'd suggest settling on the model of car you want before asking questions about bike carbs :p

Yes, you can do it.

But it will probably fail emissions.

Get a mk2/3 Polo GT and fit bike carbs, a decent manifold and acam then port the head. Should have a laugh with that.

Alternately, fit bike TBs and megasquirt n spark....But you may as well swap in a larger engine.

the mk4 6n 8v is pushing out about 60bhp, 16v appx 75bhp, what sort of increase in power would i be looking at with carbs on an 8v? are there after market kits like webbers that are a straight swap?

yes, but you can apprently do away with it

Yes. As with virtually any engine, you can junk the fuel injection and move over to carbs. But why would you on a Mk4 Polo? All you're going to do is give yourself a headache when it comes to MOT time.

a lot of people get strung up on 'bike carbs', when what they often really mean are individual throttle bodies. Anyone i've spoken to who has fitted 'bike carbs' has actually fitted ITBs from a modern bike, they're still fuel injected. The only difference really is that you end up with a seperate throttle body for each cylinder, and (most of the time) a badly designed inlet tract and a massively high, unsuable powerband. I doubt that engine would survive long with the nuts being revved off it to stay in the power.

If you really are talking about carbs, then i think you're a bit dim. It's old tech, very hard to get right and keep right (ever tried to balance two carbs?) - it's as daft as wanting to remove an electronic ignition system and replace it with a dizzy, and start faffing about with vacuum advance units, weights etc etc.

In short, don't bother.

they are talking about both carbs and itb's, not just itb's

they are saying with that and some other work they are only seeing a maximum of 30bhp increase so I guess it's for the sound and fun of it more than anything

Why do people do this with any engine anyway?:o

Depends on the engine and the carb/carbs you want to move over to I guess, but I know why the Americans do it - so many years of working out every performance trick in the old four-barrel carburettor book mean that the wealth of experience on that front is still significantly greater than for fuel injection. Hence why GM Performance Parts will still sell you the bits required to plonk a 4bbl Holley on top of your modern LS Series small-block :)

I've done three before (on my old neighbour's Jaguar E-Type). Does that count?

The 4bbl carb on my Olds is no trouble at all. Pity it's rubbish in all other respects....
