Importance of winning?

I've noticed that when I play a MP game I'm only average at, I really don't care what place I come in. I just enjoy playing the game.
Whereas if I'm playing a game I am really good at, I'll get extremely annoyed if I'm having a bad day and missing shots I would normally make with ease.

Anyone else find this happens to them as well?
Any ideas how to get past it? I'd love to be good at a game and not care if I win.
 
Yeah I find I'm the same. If I start off as a genuine noob on the game I literally ignore all chats/comments/etc since I'm still trying to get to grips with the game first. Then once I start becoming better than average it really irks me if I have an off-day or some other reason that makes me start playing poo again.

Most notably on TF2 I detest getting Nemeses :)
 
I tend to be the same to be honest. I think it's a fairly natural behaviour.

I guess the way to get past it would be to suck at all games :D
 
Young Gaming Grasshopper, when you are truly good at a game- winning will be of no importance to you. For you, keyboard, mouse and controller will be one, the alpha & the omega.

However, your unquestionable brilliance may not be equalled in terms of attractiveness.

I think it's the fact you know you aren't playing as well as you could that you're getting annoyed about - I do the same.

It's the same with sports as well e.g. hitting a bad pass in football when you know you can make it, messing up a throw in bowling etc. Just a natural reaction I think when you know you can / should be doing things better.
 
Not even from game to game, but with a single game, and different competition......

Used to be an avid online Grand Prix Legends racer. If I joined a random pickup (open) race at monza (usually goons anonymous as it's the easiest track to get round alive for noobs), I'd just sail along having the time of my life, and usually find myself finishing well up in the points and often winning, even when some of the "fast men" were also there.
But, in the UK leagues where I was pitted against people of almost identical ability, I was in the hedge all the time and spitting blood over it too.
 
IME, the online MP gaming world is full of immature idiots for whom winning is all that matters. I regularly find myself in hopelessly imbalanced games where all the best players are on one side and promptly hammer the opposition. Actually having anyone offer to move teams to even it up and produce a more balanced, and thus satisfying game is a rarity. In most cases those on the superior side will happily pummel the opposition and then shout and whoop at the end of it. When they start spouting "GG", it's laughable as it was anything but a good game :rolleyes:
 
I have possibly the biggest ego going when it comes to online gaming. (as thorpy has discovered haha)

I just think im better than every one and I should be owning them and not dying at all, and when I do die (for any reason) I get pretty miffed.

So, to me.. winning is everything. I play to win :)
 
I was so used to playing only 1 or 2 games, and constantly, to the point where i was becomming pretty good, and loosing became very rare.

Recently i've started to play a lot more games, and, at first, i got very annoyed because i wasn't instantly awesome at them, and a lot of the time, the game doesn't get played again...

My 2 fav online games are Quake4 and Supreme commander, because i'm pretty good, i get VERY riled if i don't win, or something doesn't go the way i planned, but there are a few more game that i have stuck to, and i'm average.. at best, COD4 being one of them, but i keep playing because i areally do enjoy it, infact, i can't remember looking at my score compared to others in COD4, this has made me appreciate supreme commander a lot more, as i have been playing better ad better players, and not really caring if i win or lose (still can't abide losing in 1v1 q4 though :()

So to summerise, i completely agree with the OP, but maybe i'm just 'maturing' a bit now, and am starting to accept games and me not being awesome :D
 
i don't really feel good about winning, but if things go wrong then i'll get wound up and spit the dummy out.

depends on the game though, if it's a game like flatout then u can come last fun still be on the floor lolling. but getting shot in an FPS constantly can be no fun.
 
I play COD4 mainly nowadays. I get pretty miffed when I join a game half way through and there isn't enough time to get to the top of the leaderboard, but in actual fact nobody gives a toss. Most people hate you more for coming first. I find the best way to get around this is to regular a server (193.200.158.200:28933) with other regulars. Once you get to know people and you show them what you're made of (so sad I know :rolleyes:), it doesn't really matter if you're first or not, they know how good you are.

Even so, it's a terrible thing; feeling the need to win in video games. I think it would feel better in a game where you couldn't see your kills, and you were awarded points for suppressing the enemy or carrying out an order etc. To me that would be a score worth bragging about, because it's less selfish.

It's people who care so much about points that they are willing to cheat or unfairly take advantage of the game to get more points that get my goat. They must trick their selves into thinking it's more fun.

It's a great idea for a mod. Something I'd quite like to make one day :)

Actually, ETQW does attempt to do that, though it's far from perfect. You only have an 'exp' rating at the end..and whilst you do get 1 or 2 points per kill, fulfilling missions repairing objectives/etc gives you far more.
 
dont care too much now as been playing online for many years at decent standard. more of my time is now spent just enjoying the game im playing. play proper when needed to but now more interested in getting my clan up to scratch and my son noticed as a super gamer.

Which is why ET:QW is my favourite game to play online...
