All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Looks pretty certain that we've made a £10m bid for Barry. The only way i can justify the bid is either Alonso leaving or Barry coming to play somewhere down the left. Not sure what to make of it really.

edit\ Just came up on SSN that O'Neil has confirmed the bid but said its not a cash offer but players in exchange. Carson and Riise are the obvious 2.

i think it has to be left back, riise has totally lost his confidence and we've not other real left sided options. gerrard and barry are best mates aren't they?

If Barry is on the left then I wouldn't be surprised if Benitez uses Babel more as a striker now, which I hope he does.

Quaresma and Mancini... I'd take both if we could. We really do need a classy right winger, more than anything else.

Anyone heard anything about Rafinha? It was rumoured that it was pretty certain he was joining, but thats all kinda back fired somewhat now. I hope we do get him.

I'd also throw the budget at trying to get Silva or Villa

Barry isn't quick though, so I wouldn't play him out wide. He's not a massive tackler either, or a stamina man (a la Hargreaves), so I wouldn't play him at LB either.

He's only decent (and that's pretty much how I rate him), in the middle and he's not in Gerrard's/Mascherano's or Alonso's class. For £10m it's ridiculous. Seems another middle of the road signing by Benitez for me.

I'd be pretty gutted if we signed someone like Barry to be honest. He looks good at Aston Villa.

Rumour today is Man Utd are offering £15m for Bosingwa from Porto, but they want £22m. If we get him for around £16-£18m I'll be pretty gutted when Rafinha looks a much better player and would no doubt be cheaper. I'll be gutted if Liverpool snap him up.

Some quotes are saying 22 million pounds - others are saying euros

I dont know which to believe - but seeing as 22m euros is roughly what SAF has reportedly bid (and been turned down)

Seems like we cant look further than Portugal at the moment for transfers - but who knows

Replacement left and right backs are necessary and a striker (brazilian FB's wont be ready for a year or more - unless we get a pair of Anderson's of course )

I have read rumours on google sports news that Arsenal have moved swiftly to snap up Mark Milligan of Sydney FC. Apparently the 22 year old Australian Full Back has quit Sydney FC to seal the deal.

Obviously this is the type of player than Arsenal fans are after to help regain their hold on the Premiership.

And how many people had heard of Skrtel or Vidic? ;)

10m for Barry is too cheap. I don't rate him, but then I didn't rate Carrick when we bought him and he was 18m. Barry has had more success at international level now than Carrick had at that point too.

Should be at least 15m.

Actually I believe he is a Cm who can play in the back 4.

Or we could spend 16.5m on a striker and still finish in the bottom half of the table....

I don't think Barry will go. Having put up with years of mediocrity at Villa why would he leave when they are on the cusp of getting somewhere?

Also at Villa he's the captain and guaranteed a game every week unless he's injured. At Liverpool i don't think he'd be second choice in the centre midfield as both Mascherano and Gerrard are better than he is. On the left he's not quick enough as has been said before.

Add to that i can't see Villa seeling for less than £15m.

Because Liverpool and the other three are already beyond what Villa are hoping to achieve?

I think if Barry signs he'll be as regular as Gerrard and Mascherano. ;) Which doesn't say a lot for Mr Alonso who I can see heading back to Spain. Or used sparingly.

If Barry is coming as a CM (which looks most likely) then its pretty certain that Alonso will be leaving. Every summer he's been linked with a move back to Spain and with Rafa being criticial of his form and lack of fitness after his injury and then the stuff with his child, i can't see Rafa standing in his way.

Seeing as Villa have confirmed the bid, i can't see it not happening now. Barry was very careful with what he said regarding his future a few weeks back, indicating he's looking for a move and if he does want to go then Villa can't/won't keep him.

Villa would be crazy to sell their best player/captain for £10m.
it would be a decent deal for l'pool though but not the sort which would make a huge difference to them imo

Barry would be such a huge waste of money. I can't see him playing left back as defensively he's not good enough, his positioning and tackling isn't up to scratch for a top team. He can't play left wing as he's too slow, and he doesn't have the skill to make up for his lack of pace. Even if we were to buy him to play CM we could do so much better for the price range, we paid the same price for Alonso who scores way ahead in every department. Then we've got Lucas who will no doubt develop into a far better player than Barry, if he hasn't already.

I hope Alonso stays and we keep the money to spend elsewhere, the fact is we're going to challenge for the league we still need two top class wingers, two full backs and another striker who can get us 10-15 Prem goals a season. We've got a horde of players who need to be shipped out who are either passed it, or not good enough

Riise
Aurelio (can't stay fit)
Benyoun
Pennant
Kewell
Kuyt
Voronin
all need to go.

I gotta say i just cant see the point in signing Barry, the lads a good player, but we have plenty in the middle of the park, Lucas,Plessis,Gerrard,Mascherano etc.Barry hasnt played at leftback for years, although he was very good there, i think he is happier in the middle.

We need someone to play with Torres, Gerrard isnt good enough against the top sides imo, a winger and a fullback is a must.

Tbh, we have a very industrious side at the moment, we need some intelligence in that side, weve gotten better with the acquisition on Torres, but in reality, we are still 4th way behind the mancs, despite having the best striker we have had for years:(
