My brain is about to explode with reading reviews and looking at benchmarks etc so I thought I would ask the people who would know....that's you lot :)

Which is the better card. The 8800GT 512mb or the 9600GT 512mb ?

System at the moment :
AMD 4200 Dual Core
2gb Patriot Ram
Gigabyte GA-M61VME-S2
XFX 7950GT 512mb Special Edition.

Thanks all.

the 8800 GT is the faster of the 2 altho the 9600 GT would be the better buy, the speed difference is not noticable,

Can't go above 1280 x 1024 at the moment. That's the max res of my 19" TFT.

I can already play Crysis with most of the eye candy turned on without any problems so it's not really an issue. Age Of Conan is though and I would like to be able to run that with everything on. Will also be upgrading to Core2Duo within the next couple of months so that's something else to consider in the mix.

As said in the thread, the 8800 GT is the better bet.

Though remember ATI (or amd if you prefer) and NV are readying their new cards, ATI's will apparently be upon us in around 1 month. Rumors indicate a nice boost compared to current cards.

Whether this is enough to make you wait or not really depends on how desperate you are for a new card.

I've recently upgraded to a 9600GT 512mb from a 7800Gt 256Mb and the difference is quite shocking, I'm running at 1920 x 1080 on an LCD and it has breezed through everything I've thrown at it so far. It is considerably quicker than my 7800 was at 1280 x 1024.

I would however have gone for an 8800GT had I not needed dual DVI and an HDMI port.

The difference in real world terms is minimal and probably not even noticable without fraps running :)

I think the 9600GT requires less power and produces less heat but don't quote me on that.

I have the BFG and i'm currently sitting at 762, 1009, 1909 which i think is pretty good. Note thats on stock cooling.

Does the DX 10.1 issue make any difference? I know the 8800 is DX10.0 only. My feeling is that by the time it becomes important I will have upgraded to something else anyway. What do you think ?

It works wonderfully though, performance is greatly increased. I'm hoping more DX10.1 titles are like that.

Agreed, Dx10.1 titles will start coming out when Nvidia can do Dx10.1, until then they are stopping developers from using it as it gives ATi an advantage, hence why they are having Dx10.1 removed from Assassins Creed, and why they also had a big hand in Vantage not using it, as they would have got 0 points in the Dx10.1 tests as they wouldn't be able to run em, where as ATi cards would. :)

Here's hoping that Nvidia will step up to DX10.1 this year then :(.
