8800GT or 9600GT ?

I'm just thinking that being able to run HD out to my tv might be handy, in which case the 9600GT would be the one to go for right? Had looked at the ATI 3870 but I think it doesn't quite have the grunt of the Nvidia cards?

Just been checking some benchmarks for the 3870 and 8800 against my existing 7950GT and it's apparent that no matter what card I choose it will be quite substantially faster than what I have now. One thing I can't understand though. If you look at the specs for the 3870, on paper at least, it should be a lot faster than the 8800GT so, what went wrong there I wonder. Could it just be a driver issue and the Nvidia drivers just get the best out of the card?

The shaders are clocked MUCH higher on Nvidia cards, hence the reason they give better performance most of the time

and they have more SP

although ati have 320, each is one broken into 5 to give that number, so infact they only havd 64 (the same as the 9600GT) and the 9600GT and 3870 lock horns

tbh, i'd take the 3870 over the 9600GT... IMO the 9600GT has nothing apart from slightly better AA performance. Even it's much vauunted SLI performance meanns little to me because i am on a P35 board, and a 3870 in Xfire can probably equal an 8800 Ultra anyways. and for me, AA isn't important... If at all, i'll only use 4xAA in rare circumstances, ie, when i clearly have excess horsepower at 1680x1050, my res.

I'd take the better IQ (IMO) and better driver support of ATi against an nVidia card

and yes, i prefer ATi

Someone in here may be able to help with this.. My friend is facing a similar problem..

He currently has a company homebuild type PC, no idea on the make.. It's an AM2 board with a 4200+ X2, few GB of ram, etc. Currently has a 7300gt which is obviously pants.

Now he can't upgrade the power supply aswell, though i'm unsure what is actually in it, if it can still run all of the above would the 9600gt be a better choice over the 8800gt? He's not a hardcore gamer, would mostly be for playing w0w and a couple of other titles, though i doubt anything demanding. Or should he just screw it, get the 8800GT, and see what happens?

What's the deal on the power draw on these? Would a nice single-slot 9600GT draw less than an 8800GT?

And is there such a thing as a quiet single-slot card?

good option for your mate would be to save some cash and shell out 70 quid for a 8800gs, you get better speed than a 8600gts and its cheaper than a 9600gt which sounds like just what your friend is looking for.
